[Dm] It was 2009.
[G] I was in my early 20s.
[Gb] I was filling up my gas tank before [Db] a shift at Pizza Hut.
When [Eb] I noticed the song that was playing through the overhead speakers,
[E]
[A] the chorus [C] had a
haunting [B] quality that [F] hooked me [G] immediately.
[Dm]
[Bb] [F] [G]
It was like nothing I'd ever heard before.
And though I couldn't [F] make out the lyrics very well through the [Bb] crappy gas station speakers,
I could [Gbm] tell that the voice that [F] was singing those lyrics was
[G] transcendent.
[Bb] [Gb] I was terrified that I was going [F] to forget the tune and never be able to find out what that [G] song was, so I spent
the next six hours humming it to myself whenever I could.
[Bb] After my shift was over,
I hummed it to a friend [Bbm] who told me the song was [Bb] called Like a Stone
[F] [G] by a band called [Eb] Audioslave,
sung by [Gm] a guy named Chris Cornell.
I must [F] have listened to that song a hundred times over the next few days.
[D] I would listen to it six, [Gbm] seven, eight times in a row.
[Gm]
[A] [Bb] I played that song into the ground.
[F] I devoured Audioslave's catalog, and then I [G] learned that Chris Cornell used to front [D] another band, a band called Soundgarden.
[Am]
There was so much there, and it was so much richer than anything else I'd ever listened to.
It was hard rock, and it was punk,
and it was metal all mixed into one [A] melancholy and beautiful [D] sound.
And then [G] Soundgarden led me to Pearl [Gm] Jam, and Nirvana,
and Temple of [F] the Dog, and Mother Lovebone, [D] and Tool, and Alice in Chains, [Gb] Smashing Pumpkins, and Hole, and [Bb] Live, and an entire era of
music that had been born, lived, [C] thrived, and died all over a decade before I discovered it.
[E]
Yet even after discovering all those bands, I kept [E] coming back to Soundgarden for their range and complexity and the lyrics and
experimentation, and most of all it was Chris Cornell and his voice that soared [Gb] between the lowest lows and the highest highs like this.

[F] I used to [Eb] deliver pizza for a living, so [C] when my car radio was [Eb] broken for a year,
I spent all those hours in my car belting out Soundgarden songs and [C] trying to keep pace with [Gm] Chris's inhuman vocal range.
[C] [Bb]
[Ab] [Eb] [Bb] As [F] far as I can tell he was a humble guy and a [Cm] kind person, and his solo albums were [D] incredible too.
And okay, maybe I didn't like that one very much,
but then in 2010 Soundgarden reformed and they made another awesome album, and then on May 10th 2017,
I finally got to see [Ab] my favorite band of all time live in [D] Indianapolis.
[D]
[F] And they absolutely killed it, [Eb] and I dreamed of using their [Ab] songs in one of my movies someday, or commissioning Chris to write [Bb] a song
for one of my movies, and perhaps I'd get to meet him in the [E] band and tell them how much they inspired me, and then
[Gb] The
[Gbm] music world is remembering [E] grunge rock pioneer Chris Cornell.
Singer [Ebm] Chris Cornell has died at the age of [D] 52.
Rocker Chris Cornell has died.
Cornell best [Dbm] known as the lead singer of Soundgarden.

Chris [F] Cornell lost a lot of friends who were musicians, and he would often write a song for them, [G] or an entire album.
His response was to make art for them, so I made this video for him.
