Clive and I are partners.
[F] He is [Dbm] also someone who guides me.
He still has [Eb] that knack for knowing, for being able to hear with musical ears.
He still loves music.
He still loves lyric.
He still loves melodies.
He's probably one of the few people in the industry that still has that gift
of [E] knowing what song kind of fits with what voice.
[Ebm] With me, I think it comes [A] easy for him, [Db] but this time it was a little more difficult.
He knows when [Dbm] I've had enough.
After the first four songs started to come [Eb] in and we recorded them,
it just started to roll.
It just started to roll in.
The songs started to come in really well.
[Dbm] It was the pace of the other four songs, I suppose, that brought in the other ones.
We [Eb] would meet in certain places, whether it be L.A. or New York or [Dbm] Phoenix, Arizona.
We were in Phoenix at one time and we were doing dinners.
[Eb] [Db] He's been my date for the last year at most every [Eb] event.
[Dbm] He just knows when I've said, OK, this is it.
I pretty much know when the album has [B] that feeling of [E] completeness.
It's complete.
You know what I'm saying?
[Eb]
Up until a month ago, it was complete.
Once the songs, I started sifting through songs and started to get the feel for what I do best,
what I would sound best on.
Between Clive and [F] myself, it basically [Em] came down [Eb] to a lot [Db] of the old school writers and [N] producers
that I took to very well.
I [Db] felt very [D] different because the [Eb] industry was a little different.
I wasn't about to change what people loved about [Abm] me, which [Eb] is [N] vocals, which is singing.
At first, I was a little unsure.
But it all came [Eb] together very well.
I worked with Alicia Keys on [Ab] this record.
[Db] It made me feel good.
It was a feel [Cm]-good song.
[Eb] I figured if it made me feel good, it would make a whole lot of other folk feel good.
I Looked To You came to me.
[Em] R.
Kelly, with his [Eb] genius, wrote this song for me many years ago
and wanted me to do it many years ago, and it never got to me.
Clive held it for a long time.
When I heard the lyric, spiritually, it [Db]
connected with me very much.
[Eb] I also didn't know that R.
Kelly wanted to work with me for a very long time.
[Db] Most of the young people that my [N] daughter hangs out with have Akon as their ringtone.
I was going, this guy's pretty hot, huh?
I started to get into him, I started to listen to his stuff, and he's appealing.
His grooves are great.
His island sound, you can't beat that.
Everybody loves an island groove.
The song, Like I Never Left, was a song that I thought, [Db] yeah, that would be a great album title.
Singing [Eb] with Akon was just kind of unique [B] in its own way.
You would never tell me I would be singing with Akon.
But [Db] R.
[E] Chemistry [N] and Claude, who wrote the song with Akon, is a well-accomplished writer.
He's experienced in producing.
He knows harmony.
He can sing his butt off himself.
So there's a team there.
It's just not Akon, there's a team.
[B] I appreciated the fact that Akon brought his team partner in
and was able to [A] expose that to me and allow me to see what makes Akon work.
Eric Hudson, who did Worth [N] It, he grew up in my hometown.
I know his mother, I know his father for years.
I remember this kid as a baby in East Orange, New Jersey.
[Eb] And here I am in the studio working with him.
And I looked at him and I [N] was like, where do I know you from?
He says, you know my mother, who wrote Holiday for Madonna.
And I said, oh my God, you're that little boy who can play like Beethoven, who was just amazing.
Amazing.
With the support of his mother and his father, I mean, he has done so well.
And I'm so proud of him.
And he wrote a great song.
