Whiter Shade of Pale piano chords tutorial How to Play chords
Start Jamming...
Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale.
A very quick tutorial.
I've only played this once
a minute ago so I'm just going to be fumbling through here and showing you the basics of
it.
I've got a little [F]
organ sound on to [F#] help my terrible playing but it's in the key of
C [D] and something I want you to notice here as we go along is the bass line.
It looks
real easy.
It's just since we're not using any of the black keys really, the bass line
is doing something like this.
[B] [A]
[F] [D] [C]
Real primary C scale, away we go.
So [F#] watch for that as
we're moving along here.
This whole song seems to be doing that.
[E] [A]
[Am] [C] [F]
[A] [E] [Dm]
[F] [G]
[Dm]
[Em] [Dm] [D]
[C] [F]
[G]
[G] [C]
We [Em] skip the live [Am] bandango.
[C] [F]
Turn it up a notch.
[Am] When cartwheels [Dm] crossed the floor [F] I [G]
[B] was feeling [Em] kind of seasick.
[G] [C]
[Em] The crowd yelled [Am] out for more.
[C] [F]
[Am] The room was humming [Dm] louder [F] as [G]
[B] the ceiling flew [Em] away.
[G] [C]
[Em] We called out [A] for another [Am] drink.
[C] [F]
[Am] The waiter brought [Dm] his tray.
[Dm]
[G]
That looks like [F] about it.
It moves along like that.
I don't know if there's a chorus or
a verse.
Anyways, that's most of the song.
Just how that moves along there like that.
So again, let's go really quick through [C] the intro.
[E] So I showed [C] you the bottom.
[G] [F] [E]
[C] Okay?
And
then up to a G.
[G] [F] [D] [C]
[F] F, [G] G,
[A] A, [G] G, [C] C.
[B] We skip the live [A] bandango.
[G] [F]
[E] Turn cartwheels crossed the
floor.
[D]
[C] See how that goes?
[N] Okay?
So just keep that in mind with the bass and the top part
here.
I'll write the chords up in here.
C major.
We [Em] skip the live [Am] bandango.
So [C] what
we're going to do, [Em] let's do it [C] that way.
C major, C, E, G.
In the right hand, C bass.
We're going to lower the bass notes, or the C's, [B]
[C] semitone.
C, [Em]
B in the basses.
[C] See that?
So it's just these [B] two.
[C] C major.
[Em]
This is really an E minor with a B bass.
[C] So C major.
We skip the live [Am] bandango.
A minor.
Remember we're just constantly going down here this
way.
Let me put her [C] into piano and start again.
[Em] We skip the [Bm] live [A] bandango.
And we're going
to do the same thing with the A minor.
Now the A minor is [Am] A, C, E.
[C]
Always going [F] downward.
[Am]
Turn cartwheels [Dm] crossed the floor.
Let's play it up here.
[C] So C, [Em] [Bm] drop the bass.
[Am]
A minor,
[C] drop the bass.
[F] F, F, A, C.
[C] Now instead of dropping the bass here, it's getting too low
and a little mushy over here on my right hand.
That E that I want to [F] drop to, so it's
[Am] F.
I'm going to take that E and put it up [F] here.
So turn [Am]
cartwheels [E] crossed the floor.
[Em] Same here with the D minor.
[Dm] Floor.
D, F, [Bm] A.
So we've got [D] those three D's.
[Dm] F and A on the
top.
Let's take the three D's down.
[F]
See that?
D, D.
[C] Down to C.
[Dm] It's easy, but [C] it sounds
great.
[G] G.
[B] I was feeling, [G] same strategy.
G major.
G, B, D.
Down to [B] F's.
I was feeling
[F] kind of seasick.
[Em]
That's an E minor chord.
[E]
[Em] E's, G, B.
I'm playing an E up here.
Now we're
going to drop all the E's to D's.
[G]
[Em] See that?
Looks like a lot of notes right now scattered
around, but [G] when you're playing it, you'll know what I mean.
[Em]
[G] Now [Bm] a C major chord [C] again.
We know it.
[Em] I cry out loud [Am] for more.
[C]
[Am]
[Dm] D minor.
[C]
[G] G.
[B]
Drop the bass.
[E] E minor.
[Em] [G]
[C] C.
[Em]
[Am] A minor.
[C] [F]
[Am] The
way to draw is [Dm] tray.
[G] I believe it [C] just keeps rolling on like that.
So that's the basis
of the thing.
Very quickly again.
[Em] [Am]
[C] [F] [Am]
[Dm] [C]
See how that goes?
[G] [B]
[Em] [G]
[C] Okay.
I hope that helps
