[C] Hi, I'm Steve Johnston.
Welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com.
That was Whiskey [F#] Before [Gm] Breakfast, which is a great old fiddle tune.
I've done a pretty basic arrangement of it here.
We're going to go ahead and learn this now, so [N] why don't you go ahead, print your tabs
out, put them on a stand in front of you, and we'll go ahead and get started.
Okay, so for this song, Whiskey Before Breakfast, you probably noticed I used a capo on the second fret.
It gives [G] it a little different, kind of a crisper sound, and it [D] projects differently
than if you're playing it down in the [F] regular C.
The way I'm going to teach it to you, though, is without the capo.
So I'm going to take the capo off now, and everything on the chart is going to be written
that way, as if it were just played without the capo.
[C] You can certainly [F#] play this song [C] without the capo.
You [E] know, it's just going to sound a little different, [N] not better or worse, necessarily.
Now there's three pickup notes in measure one, leading into measure two, which is actually
where the song starts.
So we've got on the second half of beat number three of the first measure, [G] I'm playing a
G and basically walking up from a G [A] up a [B] scale to the C chord.
[G] So the first note I'm playing with third finger, third fret, which is a G note, down pick,
and then the second one is open on the [A] A string.
And the last note of that first [B] measure is second finger, second fret.
[G] [A] [B] You can just pick all those down.
You know, you [G] could pick them [A] [B] back and forth if you wanted to.
Probably easier just to pick them all down.
The actual melody begins on measure two, which is over a C [C] chord, and [N] it's basically following
a C [C] scale [D] up [E] [G] [B]
[C] the neck.
So the first note of measure two, third finger, third fret on the A string.
[B] Second [D] note of the melody is open on the D string.
[E] Second finger, second fret on the D string.
And [Gm] then third [Fm] finger, third fret on the same string.
[G] And then going to open on the G string.
And those are picked alternate picking [C] down for the first note, [D]
up on the D, [E] down on the
second finger, [Fm] up on the third finger, and then [G] open with a down pick on the G string.
[C] [Gm] Down [E] up, [F] down up, [G] down.
If you're playing this at a real slow speed, it's not going to make any [C] difference.
[D] [F] But when you're [A] trying to play [G]
things [C] faster, [G] you're going to have to play it that way.
So you just need to get used to it.
Try to keep your pick down real close to the strings.
You know, the further that you get away from the string, the further you're going to have
to come back.
So you just want to hold the pick.
I hold it thumb and second finger, and kind of angle the point back just a [C] little bit.
[D] [F] [G]
The next thing is just [C] a strummed C chord.
And then the [B] melody continues with open on the G [G] string with a down pick.
Second [A] finger with an up pick on the same string.
Back [G] to open on the same string with a down pick.
[A] [G]
And then this, when it goes back to the second finger on the D string, you still want to
hit that with an up [E] pick.
A little tricky.
It's called [G] cross picking.
[A] [Em] [E] So you're coming back to the bigger string with an up pick.
Then the next note is open [G] on the [D] D string.
That would be a down pick.
You're changing direction every time on this part.
Then up pick, third finger [G#] on the A string, the fifth [C] string.
And then back [F#] to the other string, back [D] to the D string, open.
That's down.
[F#] And then the last note of that measure, measure one, [E] is an up pick.
Second finger, second fret.
Here's measure one.
[C] [D] [E] [Fm]
[G] [C] [G] [A]
[G] [Em] [D] [C] [D]
[E] [C] So [E] down, up, [F] down, [G] up, [C] down, strum.
[A] Down, [Em] up, down, [Fm] up, down, up, [E] down, up.
I would just practice that measure slowly.
Make sure you got the picking right.
Try to make sure you press all your notes right [C] up next to the fret, but not on.

[E] Second finger, second fret on the D string.

[G] And then going to open on the G string.
And those are picked alternate picking [C] down for the first note, [D]
