[A]
It's [C] Leslie here at the Nashville [Bb] Country Club and I'm at the [D] Bridgestone Arena about
to [Dm] talk with the artist responsible for the Waylon Jennings tribute project.
We're about to talk with [G] Shooter Jennings as well as Jesse Coulter and Josh Thompson.
Stay tuned right here at the Nashville Country Club.
[A] The Waylon Jennings tribute volume 2 album is set to release next year and [D] Sirius XM
hosted the live show [E] storytelling event in their studios which included Jesse Coulter,
Shooter Jennings and Hank Williams Jr.
plus many more who are all included on the volume
1 and volume 2 tribute albums.
Later Hank performed at the Country Music Hall of Fame to benefit the museum which the
Waylon tribute performers all attended.
I'll [B] go find the network, won't you treat [Ebm] me right.
[E] Y'all can keep the change and stick it out of sight.
Don't tread on [A] me.
[E] Me.
[B]
Hey all you really good news.
We're gonna take back [E] our country.
Well it used to be easy to get a place to build a house.
Now the EPA said no, that's the home of the blue mouse.
Don't tread [A] on me.
[E] Don't you tread on me.
Hey [B] all you ready for the good news.
We're gonna [E] take back [Ab] our country.
Talk about the second [F] album coming out.
What are [Bm] you looking forward to with this next album?
[N] I'm looking forward to it being heard and known about.
And just the incredible weight of charm that it has to remind you of how great the songs
were that Waylon had and to put him in remembrance.
That's what I'm thinking.
And just talk about today's event, the taping and what you're looking forward [E] to with this
event with the friends.
[B] Hank Jr.
Looking forward to Hank Jr.
and Jamie and all of us being up there.
That'll be fun.
I don't know.
I'm excited about, I'm nervous so I kind of wish I was just gonna be watching.
But you know, I look forward to screwing the whole thing up.
[Eb] No it's gonna be fun man.
Come on.
Good stories.
Have you heard it?
[N] Yeah I've listened to it a lot.
The, you know, a lot of people, great people are here too just in the audience too.
So I think it's gonna be cool.
I hope we get some good stories you know.
[B]
And you did the Good Hearted Woman song with Sunny Sweeney.
[F] That was a very great duet by the way.
And Mama on the new record which was a cool choice.
Definitely.
Can you talk about working with Sunny and just how that came about?
[E]
She's so sweet.
And, [Eb] um, [Em] Whit Stewart actually [N] put us together and he had thought about doing that with two women.
And Sunny, uh, was just right.
You know, [B] that [G] could have been all the wrong thing to do.
But [E] it just worked [Bm] together and it was hard for me [N] to sing that song because it always
been sung to me.
And so, since it was all about me, so I thought, you know, and Whit said, you know, get her attitude.
Get her attitude.
I thought, yeah, to all the girls out there, you know.
That's cool.
I like that.
[F] That's good.
And how [N] did you choose the song that you did on the first collection?
That was probably pretty hard.
You know what, I'd been, I'd been singing it live and Whit came to a show on Father's
Day a couple years back.
It was my dad's birthday also at the same time and I was doing the song there and he saw it.
I dragged him through my show, through a Flaming Lips show, all kinds of stuff.
He'll even let him say one word to me about the whole compilation.
But he's like, I want you to do that song.
And I was like, alright.
It's my favorite song kind of his.
I was real happy to do it.
It's great to talk with you today.
You [G] have fun.
The event that we are at is, uh, is for the release of, I believe, the second volume of
the Waylon Jennings Tribute Album, which I'm very lucky to be a part of.
I actually got a call a while ago from Whit, actually not knowing that this project was
going on at all.
And he said, man, I heard that, you know, you're a big Waylon fan and we've got this project.
We've cut a bunch of songs.
We've got one spot left.
And, you know, Jessie would like for it to be a song called Love of the Comet People,
which is, you know, one of her favorite songs.
And I said, man, I would love to be a part of it, man, and [B] love to do it.
[Em] And, you know, did it, recorded it, [Eb] and actually got a call from [E] Jessie about two months after
that, which floored me [G] completely.
In fact, I didn't believe it was Jessie.
[E] Because [B] who gets a call from Jessie Coulter?
I mean, you know.
But she called me and thanked me for [Ab] being a part of it and said she just loves the song
and loves the way I did [C] it.
[G] So it's been great, you know, since [E] the first phone call on.
It's [G] been awesome.
And plus [Gb] being able to, [Ebm] you know, [Ab] sit on the stage with
[A] everybody that I love is really cool.
[Bbm]
And what were you [Em] thinking before you went to the [B] studio?
Did you want to keep to the original of the song or did you want to do your [Db] own style?
Can you tell us what you did?
[Bb] You know, there's not a [C] whole lot you could do.
[B] Actually, you know, the song just [Abm] kind of lives in a [N] certain place.
And I did fix it, [Ab] you know, a little towards my style.
I mean, we raised the tempo a little bit.
It's got just a [A] bunch of key changes.
[Abm] It's a very intricate song.
And [F] there's a lot of words and, [E] you know, a lot of modulations and [B] key changes.
And I really, you know, I switched a [E] couple of those things around [F] and that's about it.
[Gb] [E] And just in general, [F] what was your favorite song growing [B] up of Waylon Jennings?
[Bb] [G] I know everybody that asked me that is all going to get a different [N] answer.
I'll give my own answer then.
You know, one of the songs that I always go back to when I put [G] Waylon's CD in is Toe the Mark.
You know, she don't toe the mark and I don't walk the [Fm] line.
Yeah, that's just, it's awesome.
You know, it's just groove, all groove.
So it's one of my favorites.
