I came to this prison when I was about 10 years old to see my uncle, Eddie Lamb.
He ended up here because of bad choices.
His dad, which was my grandpa, Cletus Lamb, was an old preacher man.
And I'm sure that when Eddie spent his years here in this prison that he had a lot of time
to remember grandpa's old sermons that he should have heeded.
And my grandmother was a good gospel singer and this song talks about remembering the
songs that mama sang.
And I'm sure Eddie thought back a lot about being at home with 14 kids, 13 siblings.
He was the youngest boy.
I'm sure he had a lot of time and probably spent a lot of time thinking about those good days.
And better times in his life.
So it's very touching for me to be here today.
[G] I don't know what cell he was in, but I know he was here because I was here.
The warden [D] led a prisoner [G] down the [C] hallway [G] to his doom.
I stood up to say goodbye like [D] all the rest.
[G] And I heard him tell [D] the warden [C] just before he reached [G] my cell,
Let my guitar [D] playing friend do [G] my request.
Let him sing me [D] back home [C] with a song I [G] used to hear.
Make my old memories [D] come [A] alive.
[D] [G] Take me [D] away and [C] turn [G] back the years.
Sing me [D] back home before [G] I die.
I recall last [D] Sunday morning [C] a choir from [G] off the streets
Came in to sing a few [D] old gospel songs.
[F#] [G] And I heard him tell [D] the singers, [C] there's a song my [G] mama sang.
Could I hear it once
[D] before you [G] move along?
Sing me [D] back home [C] with a song I [G] used to hear.
And make my old memories [D] come alive.
[A]
[D] [G] Take me [D] away [C] and turn [G] back the years.
Sing me [D] back home before [G] I die.
