Hi guys, back to do another Dylan lesson.
This time for [F#] Visions of Joanna from Blonde on Blonde album.
Now this song, the way I learned it, is standard tuning with keepo on the second fret.
And [A] pretty simple song as far as just guitar wise.
[F#] As with [A] a lot of Dylan songs back then, the guitar part is just one part of the [C#] equation
because he's doing the [A] harmonica too and singing.
So this is just the rhythm [D#] guitar part.
So the way it is, there's [A] only three chords in this whole song.
[A]
[F#] Starts in G with the harmonica.
[A]
[D] [A]
Ain't it just like a knife [D] cutting through the soul.
[B] Can't seem to [E] save my life [A] but
[C#] And one of the things that [A] it's
So it's G, [F#] [D] C, [E]
D, and back [A] to G.
And a trick that Dylan [F#] does often with the G chord is
he will [C#] play the G chord with his ring finger on the bass note
and his pinky [B] on the high note.
And the advantage of playing the G that [Bm] way is you can add your first finger and second finger.
[A]
Which Dylan, [F#m] it's a trick that Dylan [B] does a lot.
So when you do that it becomes kind of a G slash C chord.
[A]
So when you add that hammer [D] on, when you lift it [A] off,
you can add your [F#m] second finger to the [Bm] second fret of the A string.
[A]
[D] [A] And then [G#] when he starts singing,
then it goes to [E] D.
[A]
[D] Then it switches to C.
[D] [A]
[D] [A] [E]
Switches to D.
[A]
[D] [A]
[D] [A] Now there's two ways to play that.
When he [B] goes to the G, instead of playing the G to C,
[A] if you're kind of like slick [F#] enough with your rhythm playing,
you can switch [F#m] from the G to the C [A] and back quickly.
And that's another thing he does [G#m] too with the G [A] chord.
He strums out that high note.
[F#m]
[A] Emphasizes it.
[D]
[E] [A]
[G#] So anyway, that's pretty much it.
There's not really much more [A] to go [D] over with that.
[A]
[G#]
