[Bb] Next song is a song by the writer and [G] songwriter Max DeBarks, one of the greatest [D] [A] songwriters
that ever lived.
Mac wrote a [D] song like, Who's Gonna [Eb] Fill This Shoe [G] Box, and Who's [D] Gonna Stand Up Tall?
[G] One of [Bb] my favorites.
That song, [D] I think he ever wrote was a song called, You Don't Know About Loneliness,
Till It [Gm] Chisels And Stones.
[Eb] The greatest song [G] I've ever heard in my [Bb] life.
And maybe the [Eb] saddest.
That was the saddest song I've ever heard.
Except for Old Ship.
[N] [G] For me, I didn't get any sadder than Old Ship.
When I was a kid, my father used to sing Old Ship to me.
And it would always make me cry.
As a little boy, if you've never heard Old Ship, it's a very sad [B] story about an old [G] song
that I'm following in.
I did it first.
[Bm] This guy and [Db] his best friend is his dog, and they [G] grow up together, [Gm] and the dog changes his life.
[Bm] It's a lot better than [G] I was.
[Gm] And at the end of the song, he has a [Bb] shoot-it-on-the-dog.
[Am] You know, this was [N] never very big in the 80s.
[D]
[Gb] It's sad.
Yeah.
[Gm] It's sad.
[D] [Eb] And like I said, I got this [Gm] opportunity to write with Max.
I had started having a little bit of success, a couple of hits, and he called and said,
Hey kid, I've been watching you write your songs.
I said, I'd like to come out and write with an old, vulture like me.
And he said, You say when and where, pal.
[Eb] So we made a date to go write, and I went out to his palatial estate out in the country
and showed up.
Nice place.
I didn't want to show up empty-handed to Max's house, so I had [D] been working on this idea.
[Gm] We bought this couple of little gold squares.
One of them don't work now.
He likes, he wrote Chiseled Stone.
He loves sad songs.
We got out there, and he said, Kid, you [A] got any ideas?
I said, Well, I've been working on this idea.
[C] I played a [Bb] little bit of it, [Eb] [D] and I said, What do you [A] think?
He said, [Bb] It's too [N] sad.
[Bbm] I said, [Eb] Max, what do you mean too sad?
I said, You wrote Chiseled Stone.
[Bb] That's the second saddest song of all time.
He said, [N] What's sadder than Chiseled Stone?
I said, Vulture.
He [Bb] said, You got a great idea there, kid, but you're going about it the wrong way.
You should make that a positive song.
Those people should stay together.
I made the mistake of saying to [Eb] Max D.
Barnes, I said, Max, are you sure?
[Bb] And he looked at me, and he goes, Kid, take a look around here.
Tell me what you see.
I said, A whole lot of gold and platinum records on the wall, awards and songs, [Eb] a giant house,
a couple of Cadillacs out front.
He said, Yeah, you might want to listen to it.
[Bb] So I did.
We made it a positive song, and we got a [N] Cadillac just like Max.
[Em] [A]
[D]
[A] Oh, [D] can't I?
After all these [G] years we've been through?
[A] Oh, [D] can't I?
[A]
After all that [D] we've been through?
[A] [D] Oh, can't I?
Still, I'm [G] always there.
[A] If you want to see my true love, be [D] there.
[A] [D] Look at me.
Still, crazy.
[G] Look [A] at me.
Still, crazy.
You're [D] always there.
[A] [G] Oh, [D] I'm still here.
Even [G] if you're hurt.
If [A] you want to see how true love should be, [D] be there.
[A] [D] [A] A hundred years from now, [E] I know we'll find our [A] home again.
There along the way, and wondering how [E] we made it [A] all the way.
[D] Chances are, we'll be here a hundred [G] years to be.
[A] If you want to see how true love should be, [D] be there.
[G]
[A]
[D]
[Bb] [Fm] [Gm] [Eb] Chances are, we'll [Ab] be here a hundred years to be.
[Bb] Well, you may want to see how true love should be.
[Eb] Well, just look at us.
[Bb] [Cm] [Bb] If you want to see how true love should be, [Eb] well, just look at us.
[Bb] [Eb]
Oh, thank you.
