My name is Jamila Woods and I'm [C] from Chicago, the South Side.

[D] [Bb]
[Em] [Bb] When [F]
I [A] [Em] was younger, my brother and sisters [A] and I used to always sing [Bm] and our mom [E] sang and played guitar.
So [A] it was [Ebm]
where [A] my happiness came [Abm] from.
So I always knew that I [A] wanted to sing.
I wasn't always [E] that good at it and I didn't always think I was good enough to sing.
But definitely [Bb] those times [E] singing with my family were when I would kind of sing to myself in the mirror,
pretending [D] I was in a music video.
[E] I would always dream about singing,
even though it took a while for me to [A] actually [Ebm] kind of [D] hone [E] my skills as a singer.
Soul [A] music, [E] gospel, influence music, [Gb] maybe like [Abm] alternative [D] soul,
because I also listened to a lot of alternative rock growing up and I like [E] to mix those genres together.
My musical inspirations,
[Bm] especially [Dbm] for this album, are Lauryn Hill [B] and Erykah Badu and [E] a lot of my parents' music.
So I love Stevie Wonder and a lot of gospel [Dbm] music
[Gbm] and also [E] Incubus and Jimmy Eat World and [Abm] Imogen Heap.
[Dbm] The first concert I went to, [E] my mom and I went to a Jars of Clay [A] concert.
They're like a Christian rock band [G] and I really [A] loved them when I was younger.
And then the first concert I kind of went to on my own was a boxcar racer concert.
So yeah, it was like [Abm] in the mosh pit.
It was [Bm] awesome.
[E] I really want to start my own label based in Chicago that kind of operates as a community organization in addition to being a label.
So [Db] offering [E] kind of like classes and workshops [A] and
[E] training programs for young artists
in addition to giving [Bm] them resources [Gbm] to make [Dbm] their own music.
[Abm] One was playing Pitchfork [Bm] this year [E] because there was kind of a last minute change
and I got put on the main [Ab] stage [Dbm] when no one else [Bm] was performing.
[E] And so it was kind of this really amazing moment where I got to sing with my sister and my band.
It was [A] really cool.
And then the other one [Abm] was meeting [Dbm] Corinne Bailey Ray [Bm] and Esperanza Spalding.
[Gbm] [Dbm] I love them both so much and I got to [Abm] tour with Corinne [E] and Esperanza came to [Abm] one of my shows.
And so I was just [A]
really happy about that.
