Each one of [A] his PGIs has a poet [Em] [Am] laureate.
Which means you show up on the day, and you grok what's going on, and you write a [A] poem about it, and you recite it at [Am] dinner that night.
No pressure in the gig at all.
I was a poet laureate in Victoria, and I wrote this song, called Read Between the Lines.
[C]
[Am] And I subsequently got to play this at a royal gala at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
When the late Princess Diane and Prince Charles were [C] there.
[Am]
I played it very [Em] carefully.
[Am]
Playing it for them was lovely.
The high point of that day for me was actually sound check.
[Cm] [Am] We show up in the afternoon, and we make sure everything sounds right.
Then we come on and play in the evening.
We don't have to worry about any of that technical stuff.
And of course the band that's playing for the gig is all the A [B] players of Toronto.
All the first call musicians.
One of them is a horn player by the name of Guido [E] Basso.
He's a cornet player.
[C] [Am] And I played this song during sound check, and he looked up at me with those hooded [B] Italian eyes, and [Am] he just, cool chords man.
I could have retired right there.
[A] Once again.
[C]
[Am] Read between the lines.
[G] You might hear a different story.
You might hear a different rhyme.
[Am] Read between the lines.
[F] Around the world in your easy chair.
It's the roots of word that [E] can take you [Am]
there.
Yeah, yeah.
[A] [Am]
Read between the lines.
[E] [F] Whether it be by touch or sight.
Reading is everybody's [Am] right.
Read between the lines.
And [G] enjoy a magic carpet ride [F] that'll get you.
[G]
[D] Anywhere your mind will [Am] let you.
[E] [Am]
Oh, [Em] yeah.
[C]
[Am]
Read between the lines.
[F] You might feel a different heartbeat.
You might sense a [G] different time.
[Am]
Read between the lines.
[Dm] When a [G] kid has read a tale in bed, he sees so much more [D] than's being [Am] said.
Because a kid [E] can.
Read [Am] between the [G] lines.
