[Am] My dog has fleas.
[C] My dog [Am] has fleas.
[Eb] I'm like, I can't sing it,
but it's how you're supposed
to tune the ukulele,
and [B] it's one of the weirdest
[Gm] things that no one actually
[N] knows what it's about.
I've been playing the ukulele
for about a year.
What got me interested in it
was, I just, I really love
the [C] ukulele and how it sounded.
[G]
[C]
[G] So the ukulele was definitely,
[C] it goes through waves.
Like in the 20s it was good,
and I believe in the 50s
it kind of surged back,
and now it's definitely [G] surging back.
[Dm]
The most influential people
are really James Hill.
I think the [Gm] things he does
with the ukulele
is just [Am] [G] amazing.
[D] Then add the drums.
[G]
[A]
[E] She was more like
a beauty queen in [D] the 80s.
[Eb] I'm James Hill,
and I've been playing
the ukulele for about
20-odd years.
[Gb] I didn't get into the [B] ukulele
because it was popular,
but it certainly [D] has started
becoming that way,
started becoming really [G] popular.
It's sort of a [E] lightning rod
for community, too.
[Eb] The other times that the
ukulele's been really popular
have also been [Gb] times where
we've had new opportunities
to create community.
[Gm] Like when the radio
first came out.
[Gb] People gathered [Gm] around
the radio, and they felt
[C] connected to a bigger picture.
[G] And then, more literally,
the TV comes out,
and then the ukulele,
Arthur Godfrey's got
a big TV show where he's teaching ukulele,
and millions of people
[Ab] are watching it.
People are connected
to the bigger [C] picture.
And now we've got the Internet,
and people are largely,
this thing has been fueled
by the Internet.
So [Gm] people connecting
through this new medium.
One of the biggest websites
is called Fling Market Music.
[D] I also use websites [G] called Ukulele Underground,
[Gm] and then also Ukulele Hunt,
[B] because those [Bb] are some
pretty knowledgeable people on there.
On the Internet,
people with ukulele
is just [Db] really friendly.
[D]
[Dm]
You missed [G] it!
I don't [N] know exactly why
it's sort of the instrument
of the times right now,
which it seems to be.
I don't know why.
I think there's something
about it that's refreshing.
We hear a lot of guitar,
we hear a lot of things
that we're used to hearing
in pop music,
and the ukulele comes along,
and it's got this,
it's got this different sound,
it's got this sort of intimate sound,
it's got this friendly sound,
it's got a
[F] [Bb]
[F] [C]
[F] I think those are some things
that we're kind of looking for right now,
and [C] so maybe that explains
a [F] little bit of why
it's sort of like
the zeitgeist instrument.
There's some really weird stuff
bubbling up under the surface.
Some [D] people call this
sort of the third wave
of the [F] ukulele's popularity.
You've probably heard that.
[D] I'm sort of interested
in how the third [F] wave
is going to be different
from the first and second.
Is it just [Bb] going to be
like a [F] revival in the sense
that we're just like
remembering the way
it used to be,
or is it actually going to be something new?
Is it going to be something different?
I'll tell people
that [Bb] I play ukulele,
and they'll [G] kind of laugh and chuckle,
and I'll really,
but the moment I can show them
something from a great player,
or even some of the few things
that I know myself,
[C] if I play those,
[F] they're shocked,
can't believe it comes out
of an ukulele.
I remember [Gm] going into
a [C] rehearsal one day,
this is when I was doing
a [F] piece with dancers.
One of the dancers
[C] walked into the room
[F] and saw me holding my ukulele.
I just started laughing,
uncontrollably,
[Bb] and I didn't know,
I thought maybe,
was my [C] fly down,
is my hair funny?
Like, [F] he was laughing
because to [Dm] him,
it was just all wrong.
I mean, it [C] looked like
either that's a tiny [Dm] little guitar
or that's a giant [C] guy
[Fm]
holding, he couldn't make sense
of it, and to him that was funny.
If you have a [Bb] guitar
and you play a guitar,
so what, everyone else
plays a guitar too.
[C] If you have a ukulele though,
[G] it's very interesting,
it adds, it's not just
like the basic,
and it's also something
you can bond with people about.
I don't even own a guitar.
I don't even [C] have
a guitar in my house.
I didn't start on the guitar
[Eb] and then go to the ukulele.
It wasn't that kind of a thing.
They're not actually [D] as similar
as people think.
It's a totally different animal.
I mean, it's so much more practical,
so much more portable.
[F] You can just [D] fly anywhere,
drive anywhere, play anywhere.
I play on the planes,
in buses and all over the place.
It just wouldn't be as practical
to [C] do that with a guitar.
So anytime you can [F] play more,
[C] you're going to be more
connected to the instrument.
So the ukulele just [F] encourages
you to play more,
play all the time.
Why not [C] play right now?
Let's [F] play!
