Ugly Kid Joe Whatever Happened To the Band Behind 'Everything About You?' chords
Start Jamming...
This is a band I've had quite a few people [Am] request and I'm so glad I'm [E] finally covering
them on my channel.
Ugly Kid Joe would be characterized by the media as a relic of the
[Em] hair metal era while others referred to them as a comic hard partying metal [A] band.
But in reality
[Em] the group's individual members came from diverse [B] musical backgrounds [E] influenced by the likes of
Black Sabbath, Molly Crew, Red Hot Chili [A] Peppers, Motorhead [C#] and many others.
They also weren't
afraid to mix humor [A] with their music and they quickly became overnight rock [B] stars and made
history.
But [Em] whatever happened to Ugly Kid Joe?
[B] Stay tuned to find out.
[B] [G#] Ugly [A] Kid Joe began with [E] guitarist Klaus Eichstadt and frontman [B] Whitfield Crane who grew up in
[A] Palo Alto California [E] and formed a band in the late 80s.
Initially called Overdrive [A] before
settling on Ugly Kid Joe, the band's name was a goof on the glam rockers Pretty Boy Floyd
for whom the band was supposed to open at one point in time.
[C#m] Ugly Kid Joe would play gigs around
the Santa Barbara area and gave [A] their demo to a local DJ [C#m] named Will Carlin who then passed it on
to an [A] entertainment lawyer who became the band's manager and [C#] got them a deal with Mercury Records.
Shortly after [A] signing to Mercury in early 1991 [B] the pair realized that they [E] needed to round out
their lineup with better musicians.
During [A] the band's career their [E] lineup core has always centered
around Eichstadt and Crane with a revolving cast of characters coming and going.
Their debut release
an EP titled As Ugly As They Wanna Be was a spoof of the hugely controversial 2 Live Crew album
[B] As Nasty As They Wanna Be.
It took a week to record and cost the label around $12,000 to make.
Mercury Records was hoping for the EP to sell maybe 15,000 copies and it soon enough became
the first debut EP in history to go multi-platinum thanks in large part to the [B] single Everything
About You [A] which rocked [E] MTV and Radio Airwaves.
The album rocketed to number 4 on [A] the billboard
charts and peaked [E] at number 3 across the pond in Britain.
The [B] band also licensed the [A] song to the
first [E] Waynesworld movie.
According to Billboard magazine [B] there was a special way [A] that the label
promoted the [E] EP.
When the [A] band first got signed to Mercury Records the label [C#] helped get the album
into small mom and pop shops [A] where traditionally bigger labels hadn't sold albums [B] to.
According to
Bob Skoro [E] who was the head of A&R at Mercury Records who would tell Billboard [A] magazine none
of the [E] major distributors sell to mom and pop shops.
[F#] That's where the young rock and [A] metal lovers
go.
[E] That's where the buzz starts.
In addition to that it [B] would be a station in [A] Denver KBPI [E] who moved
the single Everything About You from their metal show to regular programming.
Within a few weeks
Ugly Kid Joe became [A] the second highest requested band [C#m] after Metallica.
And soon enough the band
played Denver [A] and local retailers could feel the [C#] excitement behind the group and MTV followed soon
after.
[A] The EP took on a humorous tone with tracks like [C#] Madman describing an [C#m] axe wielding man on the
[A] loose in Disneyland.
The band at one point was supposed [B] to write music for the 1992 [E] film Encino
Man, but once Don Eisner at Disney [A] heard the song he axed [E] the deal.
But critics weren't always fans
of Ugly Kid Joe.
The Chicago Tribune stated the following about the EP single Everything About You
The single which has a novelty kind of appeal pretty much sums up the entire 25 minute disc
which [E] is a cacophony of funk, rap, lame choruses and old jokes.
Despite critics not being fans of
theirs the band did get some high profile touring slots opening for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and
Def Leppard.
The band would soon follow up their EP with their first full-length studio [B] record
[A] 1992's America's Least Wanted.
[E] The album featured a surprising cover of Harry Chapman's Cats in [G#] the
Cradle which was a [E] huge hit on rock radio and became the band's [B] second top 10 hit.
[A] The single
Everything [E] About You which was released on their first EP in [B] addition to the song Madman [E] would also
appear on the LP.
[A] Despite the fact that the album was the band's most [C#] commercially successful of
their career going double [A] platinum it again received mostly mixed [B] reviews from critics
with the LA Times [Em] giving it one and a half out of four stars [Bm] claiming [A] generic MTV rad [E] party dudes
in baggies and tees who seemed to know how [Bm] certain kinds of rock were supposed [A] to sound
but have [E] no clue as to why it would read.
Prior to the band recording their 1995 [A] album Menace to
[E] Sobriety they enlisted new drummer Shannon Larkin.
[B] Menace to Sobriety was [A] once again a spoof [E] of the
movie Menace to [A] Society.
The album performed poorly due to [C#] changing musical tastes and a lack
of support from [A] the record label in addition to long tours and [C#] substance abuse problems.
The band did land some [A] high profile touring spots opening for both Van [C#m] Halen and Bon Jovi.
Ugly Kid Joe would leave [A] Mercury Records following the release of Menace to [B] Sobriety
and signed with an indie label [E] feeling that they weren't being properly supported with
Whitfield [A] Crane telling Louder Sound.
[E] I could sense that the label wasn't backing us on Menace
to Sobriety and they would have let us make another record and we could have done that
but it just didn't feel right.
I pulled my manager to the side and I told him I wanted off the label.
He told me he didn't think it was a good move but I [Am] wanted off the label because I believed we could
find another one and be who we are so we walked away.
Once the band signed to an indie label they
would release the album Motel California, a spoof of the [A] Eagles Hotel [E] California that didn't even
chart in the states.
By 1997 the band [B] was done with Crane telling Louder [E] Sound why the band fell
apart saying I think it [B] was an amalgamation of many [E] things.
I [A] think we were all sick of each
[E] other.
I was sick of them.
They were sick of me.
[B] You have to ask each guy.
They had decided they
didn't want to be [Em] in the band anymore and I was like wow okay and that was [A] it.
Nothing ends well
[E] really.
I can't really think of [A] any marriages or relationships that end well but [C#m] I suppose the band
ended at the best time that it could.
We weren't mad [A] at each other and nothing evil or horrible
[B] happened.
We just ended it but it was still really [E] sad you know he'd say.
[B] In 2010 the band [A] would
reform and they would [E] release an EP in 2012 called Stairway to Hell [B] and open for Guns N' [A] Roses and
Cooper the [E] same year.
Their most recent release happened in 2015 with [A] Uglier Than They Used to Be
[E] and as late as 2019 they were still touring as a [B] band.
That does [A] it for today's video guys thanks
[Em] for watching.
Be sure to hit the like
