Hey, [F#]
what's up you guys?
Marty Schwartz here with GuitarJams.com.
I'm going to teach you this kind of an easy version of this U2 song and I want you to
know if you're a beginner out there, I've got a free e-book that you can receive when
you sign my friend list, right in the information window there.
In this e-book, it [Bm] teaches you the basics of how to tune your guitar, [A] the first 8 or
9 open guitar chords that you need to know, and then also the beginner bar chords and
then a couple of scales.
It's [B] the foundation that I think you should learn first and it also will help you with these lessons.
This is really cool.
Just an easy [A#] strummer version of this song without the effects [C] and everything.
You can do this on acoustic guitar, no problem.
It's 4 chords the whole time.
So what I want to do is I kind of keep in mind like the guy that's learning this on
acoustic that wants to just sing it in his room or at a party or whatever and then I'll
[B] just show you that and then maybe just a couple of little cool tricks that you can try with
a delay pedal.
So the very first chord of this song, I'll give you 2 different rhythms to try.
One for the verse and then to build it up into the chorus.
But the first chord, which is right in my e-book, is the D major chord.
Very first chord.
Really important chord to know.
And then the next chord is an A major chord, [C#] which is all 3 fingers on the 2nd fret, [F#]
cross
like that, A major.
The next chord's a little trickier and it's probably the first [B] bar chord that I would teach someone.
It's called B minor.
And so we bar our index finger across the 2nd fret and then it should look, these fingers
should look like what a regular A minor chord looks like.
Up like this.
So it's a B minor bar chord.
You can look it right up in my e-book too for the diagram.
And then the last chord, a G major chord.
Like that.
So those are the 4 chords of the song.
We're going to take that D major chord and we're just going to do down, down strokes.
[D]
So like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
[F#] And I'm letting my palm kind of touch the strings a bit to mute it.
[D]
Just like that.
[B] And so we're going to go 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, [F#] 3, 4, just all down strums for all 4 chords.
Check [D] it out.
[A] [Bm]
[G] [E] That's it.
The whole thing goes like that.
[B] Just all down strums, right?
So we can, you know, you can try that as the [D] verse.
[A] [Bm]
[Em] [A] Right?
[Bm]
[B] [G] [Bm] And then when you want to build it up, you can [D] go.
[A]
[Bm] [G]
[D]
[A] [Bm]
[G]
[D] [A]
[Bm]
[G] [A]
[A] You know, it's [B] an alternate rhythmic idea there.
And so that's basically it.
Like just an easy strummer [D#] version of the song.
And, you know, I didn't pick apart everything that was going on with the edge and the delay
work that he's doing.
But one of his bags that you can just start to experiment with.
First of all, you're going to need what's called a delay pedal.
Now the [B] one I'm using is just a real simple model or like a multi-effects delay pedal
made by [C#] Line 6.
So there's the [D#] Line 6 pedal.
And I'm just going to tap the tempo that I was showing you.
So it's going dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, [B] dun, dun, dun,
dun, dun.
Tap the tempo.
[G#] [B] And then I press hard.
And I get my [C] effect [C#] is on now.
[B] So I've got my delay going.
And it's not, you know, the exact stereo delay that the edge uses and all that.
I'm not claiming that.
But some cool tricks that you can do.
So you've got the repeats going.
And what he likes to do is use these little triads and these little four-note chord shapes
with a suspended fourth.
He does it in a lot of songs.
And so basically one thing you can do is it's the, you know, the D and the A and the B minor
and the [C] G keeps going.
[C#] What you can do is you can go up to where D is on the high E string on the 10th [E] fret
[Bm] and cover the 10th fret there, the 10th fret on the B string.
[D] Just even hearing that.
And it repeats.
And then I'm [N] going to put my middle finger on the 11th fret of the G string now.
[D] Check this out.
But then what you can do is add your ring finger to the [B] 12th fret of that G string and
you get this kind of U2 [D] sound.
[N] Hey, so hopefully that was helpful to you.
Like I said, you can sign up for my free e-book.
It will give you some good beginner chords to go by.
And plus being on my friend list, that's how I take my requests.
[C] It's also where I'll give you guys special offers that I only give out on that [B] list.
So I think [D] it's worth it.
[C] And regardless of that, even if you don't, I [Cm] appreciate all the support.
You watching [B] my lessons and all that [N] stuff.
And I plan on doing a lot more.
So hopefully I'll hear from you.
And thanks a lot.
