Tuning Your Kalimba chords
Start Jamming...
In order to retune your kalimba you need to have three things.
You need to know
what you want to retune your kalimba to or tune it up to.
You also should have an
electronic tuner, though a piano could suffice if it's in tune, if you have a
good ear.
And last but not least you need a kalimba to tune.
Now just play your
kalimba and see where it's at.
[Fm] [E] It's pretty much in tune.
[Am]
Oops.
[G]
[F] So it goes
back and forth between reading that a little bit sharp [G] G and a little bit
flat.
Sometimes it will say it's some other note and you have to kind of
ignore those notes.
[N] That's a little bit sharp.
I'm just gonna pull it [A] out while I
wiggle it.
Too far.
So push it in.
Sometimes when you retune it you can
excite a buzz.
You heard that for a moment I [Am] put it back.
That's pretty
good.
[A] This should be [Cm] the C.
Slightly sharp.
[A] See that red is [Fm] coming on.
[E] I'm
gonna pull it out a bit.
[Fm] Too far.
Push it [E] in just a little bit.
I'm getting a
little bit of a buzz on this one.
It went away.
So that's lucky me.
Here [Am] is the A.
Pretty good.
[B] Here's F sharp.
[Eb] Pretty good.
[G] Here's D.
Oh my god.
Look at that.
That's
halfway between D and D sharp.
Bring that down.
So what I'm doing is I'm pushing
down and pulling down at the same time and wiggling so it comes loose.
[F] I have to
[D] do a little more.
Now if you're finding [Gb] it difficult to [D] move you can use a
pen.
We have a little bit more to go.
See I'm pushing down with my pen.
That's a
hair bit.
[G] Okay pretty good.
We didn't go too far.
Usually I go too far and have to
[D] come back.
Well maybe I did.
Well the [B] B.
[G] Pretty good.
G.
[Gb] Hair bit flat.
[G]
Now part of
that buzz is the table there.
That doesn't really matter.
So you're gonna be
playing on the table.
In case you might like it.
[D]
You can actually put knives and
forks [G] together on the table to enhance the buzzing.
[Ab] A.
A little sharp.
[G]
C.
[C] Pretty
good.
E.
Just a wee [Em] flat.
[G] G.
Pretty [Eb] good.
I'm gonna
well it can't make up its mind
[G] whether it's flat or sharp.
I'm just gonna let it be.
Which brings us to B.
Flat.
Look
at that.
The needle's saying it's flat.
D.
Right on.
F sharp.
Pretty good.
Let's play
it.
[E] [Em]
[D] [C] [D]
[E]
[G] [Ebm] So I've got one tuned kalimba thanks to my tuner [A] and the little chart that
tells me what the tuning should be.
If you don't have one of these look for one
on kalimba magic dot com and you can get one.
You can invent your own tunings of
course.
So you could just do that by trial and error or you could actually
plan a tuning in advance.
Write it down like this.
