I want to tell you a little bit about a new lesson that we have up at Totally Guitars.
And it's from Alexander, the lead singer from Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros.
He put out a solo album in 2011, which is called Alexander.
The song is called Truth.
And it's a great strumming song.
It uses a lot of actually nothing but bar chords.
And the lesson I put together on this, we treat it as an ear training lesson.
So in the parts where I'm playing it and it got the hand blocked up so that you can just
hear without seeing what's going on and really try to rely on the ears.
And if you're trying to figure out a song by ear, the big thing that I point out in
this lesson is, if you were to hear something like this, [G]
[F]
[Am] [G] the key is [F]
[A] look for the bass notes.
And what you're trying to hear there is this.
[G] [A] If you find the bass notes to the chords that you're listening to on the sixth string, you
would go to that spot, in this case I'm at the fifth fret, and use the E shape, the E
family to play the chords.
So I put the bar, I heard fifth string in the fifth fret, [G] and then the third and [F] the
first in the [Em] bass.
[G] And so I went to the fifth fret, put down [A] an E minor shape chord, [Am] or an E major [A] shape chord.
[N] The chord is probably either major or minor.
And then just see which one sounded right for the spot.
So again, what I played here was [Am] this.
And you might be able to hear by now that that was [A] not this.
[Gm] So the first one was a minor chord.
The second one was the [A] major chord.
Then the bass went down.
[G] And did the chord have the major sound or the minor sound?
[Gm]
And then it went down [F] again to the first fret.
[F#] And did it have a major [F] sound or a minor [Fm] sound?
The minor [N] sound would be shaped like E minor, just two fingers, and the major sound would
be shaped like E major, with all three fingers down.
And again, here's what I [Am] played.
[G]
[F] So you hear this [A] is the bass, [G]
[F] [E] and the quality of the chord.
[Am] [G] [D] Minor, major, [F] major.
[D] So that [F] technique can be applied to figuring out the chords to [D] many, many songs, especially
if you're hearing mostly chords [C#] that are where you're strumming everything, you're not hearing
intricate picking or some things like that, like you might in Hotel California.
So listen to the bass notes, and then find the [Gm] bass notes, and look for [A] them.
Look [E] for them and listen to whether the chord is major or minor.
[N] Try them both if you're not sure.
And so that's the point of this lesson on truth, because it is a pretty easy song.
It does use [E] exclusively barre chords, [F] and most of them out of the E shapes.
So [F#] it's a great lesson in that.
So that's what's going on with the lesson that's part of the Target program here at Totally Guitars.
I put together lessons occasionally that [N] do have this ear training focus, rather than
just say, hey, here's the chords, go learn how to play it.
It's really important to learn to pull things out of songs that will apply to other things,
and ear training is a very, very important part of it.
We also have a lot of pretty easy lessons, good beginner lessons.
This is not a beginner lesson because barre chords can be tough.
One other thing I talk about in the lesson, by the way, is techniques for keeping, for
not getting too tired while you play barre chords.
So that's a useful thing there.
But anyway, we have some other lessons in our free lessons section, 50 or 60 probably,
to get you going there, but they're also here at the TG Free Lessons channel at YouTube.
And then many, many songs in the Target program that all stress different aspects of playing
the guitar, whether it's barre chords or fancy strum or finger picking or whatever.
So I encourage you to come check it out, but the lesson on truth is up now and available
to our Target members or individually, and it goes into how to play it and how to listen.
