Aloha!
All right, [Ab] I'm gonna talk story about me and Ernie and [Bb] how we got
together and how we started the group, Ka'au Crater Boys.
Actually me and Ernie,
we kind of knew each other since we were young kids.
We were [C] born and raised in,
I don't know, born and raised, but we used to live in housing, Palolo housing, when we were
young, elementary days, middle school.
We went [N] to Jarrett Intermediate and then
high school, Kaimuki High School.
You know, I never really used to hang out
with Ernie because Ernie was two years older than me.
I was with me, Chino and
Nathan hanging [Ab] out.
Ernie [G] was with some other musicians.
[Gm] Me and Chino and Nathan,
we was doing the Hui Ohana, what is that now, Sunday Manoa.
[Cm] Ernie and his guys,
they were doing like C&K, Kalapana, [Fm] and then, yeah, so [N] that was high school days.
So anyway, after high school, about 1982, that's the first time me and Ernie played
music together.
We was known [Eb] as ET, Ernie and [Gm] Troy.
So we used to play at, you know,
little clubs like some, a club across from Kahala Mall that was called Noah's Place.
You could only fit like 50 people in there, but we had good fun playing those
music.
Then we used to play at Elks Lodge and then, you know, we went on a couple of
trips to Japan on some Polynesian shows during the 80s.
Then we kind of, you know,
we wasn't playing music [Bbm] together.
Then when [Eb] we started the Ka'au Crater Boys,
that was 1990.
We recorded Tropical Hawaiian Day.
That was our first [N] CD.
Then after that, we did like five CDs.
So four and a best of CD.
Ernie's [C] favorite
album was number two, The Valley Style.
[Eb] [G] For me, I couldn't pick one because I
would listen to one, I would listen to three.
I liked them all.
I thought of myself,
I thought that I was really fortunate and lucky to be playing music with Ernie
Cruz because I thought he was like one of the best singers in Hawaii at that time.
I used to listen to him sing and I was like, right next [Ab] to him, I would go,
oh my gosh, [Gm] this guy was the best singer.
One of the best.
Some things about Ernie is
he was really humble.
He didn't go around bragging and stuff like that.
He would say,
we just play music and go surf and [Ab] whatever.
[G] One thing, he wasn't about dressing up too.
We used to go do weddings and I [Gm] would come to the wedding all dressed up and Ernie would be like,
t-shirt, I would be like, oh my God.
But you know, even some people, they would be like,
yeah, I want to see.
But once Ernie starts singing, oh boy, everybody just, wow.
Okay.
But yeah.
[F] And then, [Gm] you know, we just thank all the people for appreciating our music and
showing their love and even all the radio stations playing our songs.
Even to today,
playing our music and all the different bands wanting to do our music.
Thank you,
Bertaz, Les, and Sonny for doing this tribute to our music.
And yeah, that's one thing about
Ernie is that he was really thankful to all the people.
You know, he appreciate and we
appreciate all of the love.
[C]
Anyway, [G]
Miss Barra Ernie, I'm so sad that, you know,
when I heard the news that he passed away, you know, I have a big container full of Ka'au videos
of us in all the islands in Hawaii, Brazil, a couple of times, [N] Japan, hundreds of times,
a bunch of times, a lot of times, the West Coast, Vegas, I got all kinds of videos.
When we broke
up in, let's see, [Ab] I forget, 1998, 1999, 2000, around there.
From then to the time Ernie passed
away, I never did hardly watch, in fact, I never even watched any of the videos.
I just was like,
you know, kind of hurt that we broke up.
I was like, oh, I'm not gonna.
When he passed away,
I watched some of the videos.
Oh my gosh, I was just crying, crying, crying, just watching our
videos.
So [N] I got a whole bunch of memories from me and Ernie's music all in this bunch of videos.
Maybe one day I'm gonna make some DVDs, Ka'au Creative Boys DVDs, Ka'au Creative Boys in Brazil,
Ka'au Creative Boys in Japan or something.
You know, and then some of the proceeds give to [Ab] Ernie's
family too.
Yeah, one day we'll do that.
But anyway, love you brother Ernie, miss you, I wish
you was here.
And anyway, yeah, one thing, Ernie's best friend, before Ernie passed away,
[N] I kept
telling Ernie, hey, come on Ernie, let's go do it again.
You know, I never gave up.
I kept calling
him up and say, Ernie, come on, you ready?
Let's go play again.
Then I heard that he passed away
and then his best friend told me, guess what?
I think Ernie was getting ready to get back together.
He was telling me, you know, [C] I kind [Ab] of felt that too, if I just keep, well, I love you brother Ernie.
And anyway, I don't know what else to say, but I can go, you know, if [N] we have like about a week,
I can go through a lot of different stories, but I don't have that much time and I'd like to turn
back the stage over to brother Tasdan.
And thank you, thank you, aloha everybody, loving guys,
you know, on behalf of me and brother Ernie, we always love you guys and we
thank you for all your support.
Thank you, aloha.
