The original record of this is so iconic.
Your own personal Jesus.
And then [G] the chords sort of go
[F#] [F] [Em]
[Am] And then another time they go
[G]
[F#] [F] [Em]
Another [Am] time they go
[Bm] [C]
[Em] I never learned them.
I had to have a chord chart every time I played anything on it.
I thought it would be interesting to see if we could do it
acoustically, you know, with just real instruments.
Came up with this version of it.
[E]
[F#] [Em]
[E] Yeah.
I always sort of think like a jug band, you know.
This part of it hasn't [Em] changed.
[E]
[Em] Your own personal Jesus.
[E]
[G#] I thought the perfect person to do it might be Iggy Pop,
if he would do it.
And we sent it to him, he really liked it.
He was in, I think he was in Miami somewhere.
And we had one of those Zoom sessions where
we weren't seeing him, but we were hearing him
while he was doing it.
He was great.
He was really, really on good form.
And he learned the song.
And it's not the easiest arrangement.
It does kind of, it does funny things.
But he had it all down.
And he told me, I'm going to do four takes
and the first take is going to be like this.
The second take is going to be harder.
The third take I'll go a bit crazy.
And the fourth take I'll talk it.
That sounded good to me.
So he did this great vocal and we put it together.
Believe me, we used all of it.
The talking, talking came in really useful,
especially on the third verse, you know, where I could use
his spoken thing to echo your own, your own personal, personal Jesus.
We kind of lifted it up.
I was pleased with that.
But when he heard it, he suggested that we
might want to, because it was [Em] acoustic guitar, it was,
it was good, but it was a bit Simon and Garfunkel.
And I think he wanted it to rock more.
He suggested a guitar player called Phoebe Lonnie,
who plays with the Lambrini Girls.
And Phil's guitar is still there.
But now there's, there he is.
At the Dobro.
But Phoebe definitely gives him a kick on the backside.
