[Gb] [Db] Hey guys, welcome to Tomans Guitars and Basses.
[N] You all know Stevie Wonder and you all know his hits like
I Wish and Superstition, but his career started way earlier in the Motown era,
as you might have heard in the intro.
I want to start with the song that was released in 1968.
It's the earliest song in my top 5 list and it was written by
Ron Miller and Orlando Merton for Motown Records.
And therefore we also need a Motown bass player and that could be no one else than
[F] James Chamberson.
Here is For Once in My Life with the phenomenal bass line by James Chamberson.
For once in my [A] life [F] I have someone [Db] who needs [Gm] me
Someone I've needed so [Dm] long
[Gm] For once [Gb] I'm not afraid of anything
[Gm] I can do it well [D] life needs me
[C] Somehow I know [F] I'll be strong
For once I can touch what my [Dm] heart used to dream of
[Bb] Long before I knew
[Am] Oh, someone [Dm] warm like you
[Gm] Would [Am] make my dream come [Bb] true
[D] For once [F] in my life
[Dm] I won't let [Ebm] sorrow hurt [Gm] me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once I have something I know won't [C] [F] desert me
[N] The lyrics of the next song focus on his childhood in the 1950s and the early 1960s.
And it's about how he wishes [Ebm] to go back and just relive it.
The song was written and produced by Stevie Wonder and the bass player is Nathan Watts.

[Bb]
I've never had it all
In my heart [Ab] [Ebm]
was the [Bb] Christmas one but in my heart
[C] Even though it's [Fm] sometimes
[F] late
We were happy with the
[Fm] Joy that they [Gb] would bring
[Ebm] Sneaking out the back door
[Ab] Hang up the door, good [Eb] luck, it's not too late
Oh, [Bb]
really I'm [Ebm] bad, so
But what I [Bb] told you not to do was I
Did [E] you [Bb] know
You got [C] to bring the water to your [Abm] eyes
[C]
And think it was all [Fm] control
But when [Bbm] you're high and the disco beats
[Ab] Was not [Bb] right,
[Ebm]
[Bb] [Ebm]
[Bb] I think I'm all [Eb] alone
One [G] of Stevie Wonder's role models was jazz legend Duke Ellington.
Therefore he wrote a song because he influenced [N] him so much as a musician.
He said, I knew the title from the beginning but wanted it to be about a musician
Who did something for me.
So soon they are forgotten.
I wanted to show my appreciation.
Again, the bass player is Nathan Watts and you can hear the famous unison line representing the pentatonic scale.
[C] Here is Sergiu.
But [D]
[E] you can tell right away [D] when the people start to [B] move
They can feel it, [Fm]
[E] they can feel it [Dbm] all [Gb] around
[B] They can feel [Ab]
[E] it, they can feel it [Dbm] all around
[B] [Ab] [D]
[Gb] On [A]
[Abm] [Ebm] [Gb] [B]
[Ab] [Gb] [B] the next song the bass line is [G] not played with an electric bass.
It is played with a Moog bass and Stevie Wonder played it himself as he did with the drums and the [Eb] clavinet.
He wrote the song together with Jeff Beck and [G] he gave him the permission to also record it.
So have a listen to the hard rock version of the trio [B] Beck, Bogert, Eppis.

[Am] [E]
Stevie Wonder's Superstition reached number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 1973.
