Hi, I'm Billy Taylor, and it's my pleasure today to welcome a friend, a gentleman whose
work I've admired for more years than he or I want to think about, but he's a beautiful
player who's really a piano soloist, and I want to focus on that today.
This is Tommy Flanagan.
Hi, Tommy.
Hey, Billy.
Listen, you know, you are a guy whose solo piano I have enjoyed for so many years, and
I've heard you with Ella and with Coltrane and with everybody you've played with, but
what I really like to hear is the kinds of voicings and all the marvelous things that
you do alone at the piano.
Do you like to play solo?
Yeah, I do.
I really do, because I mean, I find that I've listened to a lot of orchestras, you know,
like growing up, you know, and I always was intrigued by the sounds that, you know, like
you can duplicate that just about on the piano.
So a lot of things that I play solo are things that I've heard orchestras play, kind of revised
them for the piano.
Things I've heard, you know, like this Tad Dameron piece, I think, Smooth as the Wind
is one thing that I directly heard and took it from the band arrangement and played on the piano.
How's it go?
I played it stacked off with a French horn line.
