[Dm] You know when I [E] moved back to Woodstock after not being here for, seeing the place for 12 years,
[Bb]
I started to hang out with Rick Dango.
It was a year before he died.
And of course you all know who he was.
He was a musician, a great friend.
And he always knew that I would be staying up awake late, late at night writing songs.
And he would come over at 2 in the morning, 1 in the morning.
And [E] I'd always leave, and [D] I'd see that smiling face out of my window.
And he'd come in, we'd have coffee, we'd have whiskey [Eb] and other things.
And he [Cm]
passed [D] on 10 years ago.
[G] And a long time went by.
I had wanted to write about him.
[E]
A couple years ago that I wrote this.
On his birthday, which is
[Gm] December 10th,
I always, to this day, leave [N] that light on for him.
His birthday was the 29th.
The day he died was December 10th.
So those two days in December,
that light shines on him with honor and memory all [Eb] the time.
[Gm] [Cm]
So this is [Dm] the title song of [Eb] my new album.
[G]
[Eb] [Gm] [C] [Eb]
I'll Leave the Light On For You.
[Cm] [Gm] [C]
[Eb] [Cm] [Ab]
[Eb] They told me [Bb] you left [Cm] us early [Eb] in the morning.
[Ab] The sky was black with rain and the sun refused to shine.
[Eb] You slipped [Bb] into a [Gm] dream, [C] just kept [Eb] right on dreaming.
[Ab] Beyond the speed of light and beyond the touch of [D] time.
[Eb] I know you [Gm] kissed your wife [C] and son before [Eb] you vanished.
[Ab] From high above you saw the town you loved come into view.
[Eb] Then deep into [Gm] the sky [C] you see the [Eb] northern border.
[Ab] Canada, wherever you, boyhood wish you had came true.
[Cm] And I never [Eb] see your [Ab] face outside my [D] window, [Cm] silhouetted by [Eb] the silver [Bb] pole.
[Gm]
[C] But every now [Eb] and then [Ab] when I hear that lonesome wind blow,
[Fm] I'll imagine that you're [Ab] standing [Bb] there like you used to do.
So [Eb] I'll leave the light on for you.
[Ab]
I'll [Eb] leave the light on for [Ab]
you.
[C] [Eb]
The telephones [Gm] they rang [C] to the mountains and [Eb] the valleys.
[Ab] Your name was on the wires around the world from coast to coast.
[Cm] [Eb] The DJs played [Gm] your songs.
[C] They were somber, they were [Eb] sorry.
[Ab] I wonder where those mourners were when you needed them the most.
[Cm] And I never [Eb] see your [Ab] face outside my [Bb] window, [Cm] silhouetted [Eb] by the silver [Bb] pole.
[Gm]
[Cm] But every now and then [Ab] when I hear that lonesome wind blow,
[Fm] I'll imagine that [Eb] you're standing there [Bb] like you used to do.
So I'll [Eb] leave the light on for you.
[Ab] I'll [Eb] leave the light on for you.
[Ab]
[C] [Eb] Forever [Gm]
in our souls [C] you'll always be [Eb] remembered.
Tonight [Ab] we'll hear you in our hearts like a river underground.
[Eb] You always [Gm] sang a song [Cm] that said it [Eb] makes no difference,
[Ab] but you made such a difference to everyone around.
I [Cm] [Eb] wonder where those mourners were when you needed them the most.
And I never see your [Ab] face outside my [Fm] window, [Cm] silhouetted by the silver [Bb] pole.
[Gm]
[Cm] But every now [Eb] and then [Bb] when I hear [Fm] that lonesome wind blow,
I'll imagine that [Eb] you're standing there [Fm] like you used to do.
So I'll [Eb] leave the light on for you.
[Ab]
Yes, I'll [Eb] leave the light on for you.
[Ab]
Yes, I'll [Eb] leave the light on for you.
