Okay, Sally Steele here backstage with Tom Kiefer.
Tom, great job out there here at Chuck
Brennan's great event.
Thank you very much.
I had a good time.
It's cool to be here.
One thing I was really impressed is, you know, you had some vocal problems a while back, you know,
did that all heal?
Tell us about that.
Well, it's [C] not something that heals.
It's a neurological
condition.
[G] I have a partially paralyzed vocal cord.
So I had to, I was told I [Bm] would never sing
again years ago and [C] I had to [G] retrain it.
So I have to do like therapy every day.
Like for those
three songs, I did an hour and a half of warmup.
[Eb] So how did, how do you get a paralyzed vocal cord?
[Bb] Well, there's [G] a couple different ways that I won't bore you with [Eb] all the medical
things, but it [Gm] doesn't have anything to do with singing.
[C] So there's a number of ways that can
happen.
Drinking a Coke real fast?
Possibly.
I haven't heard that one, but that's, that's a maybe.
Yeah.
We'll have to do [G] some research on that [Gb] because I have [E] drank Coke very quickly [Gb] in my [Eb] life.
Now [N] you moved to Nashville.
Now what was your goal to move from Nashville, you know, from living in
LA and [Am] Pennsylvania all these years?
Well, I never actually lived in LA.
I lived in, I grew up in
Pennsylvania [F] and I lived in South [G] Jersey for years when we put Cinderella together.
And I moved [Cm] to
Nashville in the [G] nineties, the mid nineties, because [Cm] Cinderella was drifting apart at the [C] time.
The [G] whole music scene was changing [Eb] and I was looking just for like a shot in the arm.
You know,
I was going to thinking about doing a solo record then.
[C] And I started writing with [Eb] people down there
and I just fell in love with the town because there's just [G] so much talent down there from
musicians and writers.
And so that, that's what I, you know, I was working with people down [Cm] there.
And the next thing I knew, I just bought a house.
That was it.
Great.
[G] You're going to stay there.
Yeah.
I love it there.
Yeah.
What's your address?
We'll come and visit.
I just kidding.
Now, I don't [N] think I'll disclose that on national video.
I'm just kidding.
Now, you know, you got
your solo record out and everything.
Now, before we talk about that, now what's going on with
Cinderella?
Are you still [F] doing that or with them?
Well, [C] we're, we're like on a [G] break, you know,
we toured a lot in [Cm] recent years.
And at the end of last year, we [G] decided to take a break because
we've been touring for about three years in a row.
[F]
[Em] And it was right around [G] the time I had
signed this deal with Merrivy Records and was going to put the solo record out.
So the timing
lined up for Cinderella, you know, it was a good timing for us to be off the road this year because
I've been out all 2013, you know, promoting the solo record.
So, and going to be next year too.
So, okay.
How did you find the musicians for [Em] your band?
Well, you know, that [Cm] was,
[G] it was like a fate, you know, the first guys that walked in the room for [C] auditions were just the
guys.
And they [G] came through a guitar player that I've known for years, who's a friend of mine,
and he offered to help put the band together because he knew I was stressed out because that's
like, you know, I've been in the same band for years.
And the whole time we were making this
[Ab] record, I kind of dreaded the idea of having to put together a band to recreate [C] it because I was
using session players on doing the record over [Eb] the course of the 10 years we were making the [G] record.
So, and [C] it was just [G] such a pleasant surprise to like, walk into a room with these guys.
And they
just, it just sounded like the record the first night.
And they're just amazing [Abm] guys.
So.
You were smoking.
I saw you and I think it was Jimmy Kimmel or The Tonight Show and you rocked.
Oh, David Letterman.
It was.
I watch all those.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was fun.
That was the first time I actually ever did one of those.
And it was cool.
[F] Tell the people that haven't heard your music, what you want them to know about it.
On the solo record?
Yeah.
Well, I'm still doing what I've always loved to do.
And that's, you know, blues inspired hard [C] rock.
[F] You know, it's [Fm] not a big stretch from [C] Cinderella.
There's some things, you know, just as a [N] writer,
you know, you grow and there's some things on the record a little bit different.
But for the most
part, you know, having been the lead singer, did a lot of the guitar work in Cinderella,
and I was the [F] main songwriter.
So, you know, [Am] I can't really hide from that.
So that there's [G] a
sound there that's me, [C] like it or not, that's carried over into [G] my solo work.
So it's [N] similar
in that sense, you know.
Well, we love it.
It's hard rock.
We hope you come to the Vegas Rocks Magazine Awards.
Last question.
Question of the night.
What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear?
To lose this again.
Thank you.
Certainly one of them.
All right, great.
Hey, thank you so much for it.
I have a lot more, but we won't go into it.
