And I was playing in all the bars around Memphis just doing what I'm doing right now, you know

I got this phone call from one of the studios in Memphis and one of the guys in town
Knew who I was and knew what kind of music I liked and so he had gotten this opportunity
he thought I would appreciate and it was that John [C] Prime was coming to Memphis to
[G] um record and that they had wanted somebody to be the runner
[B] And so I was the one who picked him [F#] up and drove him back [Cm] and forth from the studios

the first morning I went to get him I picked him up at the Peabody Hotel and
He was drinking vodka and listening to Merle Haggard
And we went over to the studio and I remember saying uh
To him that my birthday was the next day
and he said
My birthday's today

and then I remember [N] him telling me he was gonna have a
a record company and
and then a
Couple days later after we'd been doing this recording and I was doing running errands and stuff for him
I played this show at this club called the Daily Planet
And about midway through the show.
He came walking in the door
And sat by himself and listened to me sing my songs and um
I remember after it was over and everybody had cleared out.
It was just him and me talking and uh
a couple of our friends were there, you know, and uh
He was getting ready to go [Em] record that next day
And we were had we had our guitars that we were just playing
