The Story of "Truckin" by The Grateful Dead chords
Start Jamming...
[E] Alice, got a soft machine, [A] Houston, close to New [B] Orleans, New York, got the ways and
[A] means, but just won't let you be,
[E] no.
Mother cat, you mean a man to gamble?
[Bm]
There was [E] a romance about being a young man on the road in [A] America, [E] and you had to do it.
It was a rites of passage, and at the same time it was [C#m] the material [E] that you drew from
to write about.
We were starting to become real guys, [A] and really [B] enjoying the hell out of that.
Nothing but the time.
[A] We toured more or less [E] four to six months out of the year.
It was our bread and butter, we weren't selling that many records.
And we had a lot of fun [A] out on the road, got into a lot of trouble.
We left some [G] smoking craters of [A] some holiday hens, I'll say that.
[Am]
And there were a lot of places that wouldn't have [G] us back.
[F#] [A] [D] All this is [B] absolutely [F#] autobiographical, all this stuff in Chicago.
[A] But a lot's [E] hatred's been.
This was written over a long period of time.
And there are lots of, I've had a verse, once in a while the music gets into the street,
50 old ladies bug every cop on the beat, they're putting the lock on Lindley Meadow
when keys are beginning to look like we can't play in the park.
[A] You know, that kind of stuff.
We had [E] lots and lots of verses.
We had all thought that maybe we would just keep adding to trucking over the years.
But the funny thing is, once you [A] get it down, it [E] is down.
You [B] don't go back, you don't revisit it.
[A] It [D] [A]
[E] was autobiographical.
We told our story in song.
So I knew that the words were [A] strong.
[E] They were powerful, they were depicting real events, you know, and real people's lives.
And they became part of the fabric, part of [G] the history [E] of our day.
People could sing it, know there was an event directly connected [A] with it.
[E] Boston, down on Weatherstreet, [A] set up, not falling thin, [B] not
In those days there wasn't any rock and roll bubble [A] that would isolate [D] us [A] from [E] the world as we went through it.
So, I mean, the walls of the hotels were all thin.
And we didn't charter planes, so we [G] flew commercial when we flew.
And a lot of times we took [E] buses.
And I would see a group of much younger people doing things in a way that I envy now, looking [A] back on it.
[G]
[F#m] When [A]
[D] [A] [G] [F#]
[A] you [D] make a record, you always think, this [Bm] record is going to make it [F#] for us, you know what I mean?
But we were never climbers in that sense.
For us, we [A] were already having fun doing what we were doing.
We already knew that it had [E] almost no commercial potential, apart from the community that we were in.
And that was fine.
We were having [Gm] a good time, and it was working out good.
[A] And the music [Em] we were making had some value [G#m] to us [A] and to the world that we lived in.

Truckin' must have been the nearest we came to a hit song on the American Beauty album.
We were a live touring band, traveling America six months of the [A] year.
It was always difficult for us to adapt [E] to the limitations of the studio,
even though we [B] recorded the whole of this LP in just three weeks at Wally [A#m] Heider's in San [Dm] Francisco in September 1970.
