[Bb] Hey, it's the Rayman and thanks for joining me today.
Those of you that know me know I love the Rolling Stones and [B] one of my all-time favorites
is [G] a song called Gimme Shelter.
Before I get into that, let's talk about the importance of being a background singer.
Background singers can [A] make or break a record.
In this case, a little gal by the name of Mary Clayton [Gb] really shot this song up the charts.
Let me tell you the story.
Mary was a, [Bb] her father happened to be a [A] minister, she sang and she was raised up in gospel.
She had a set of lungs like unbelievable, just like Aretha Franklin if you can imagine that.
She [Bb] did a lot of work with Ray Charles, with Elvis Presley, with the Supremes.
She was constantly in demand.
Fast forward a little bit to now she's laying [G] in bed with her husband, she happens [Gb] to be
nine months pregnant, hair up in curlers, feeling miserable, girls you know the feeling,
right?
[A] Phone rings, it's this cat from the stones named Jack Nitsche, [N] he says, Mary can you
come down, we need you to record with the Rolling Stones.
She says, who's the Rolling Stones?
Husband grabs the phone and he says, what's going on?
He relays the story to her and he says, Mary I think [Ab] you should really do it, it would
be great for your career.
Hair in curlers, [G] big as a house, she goes down one o'clock in the morning and Keith
takes her [Bb] aside and says, Mary I want you to sing [A] Rape and Murder, just a shot [Ab] away,
just a shot away.
Okay?
And he runs through it once and she gets it.
He says, can you do it one more time?
She did it one more time and she says, oh she blew the roof off the joint.
He says, one more time.
She goes, okay, one more and then I gotta go because I didn't feel that good.
She did it, left the studio and never heard from him again, right?
She goes home, not feeling well, [A] before she could get to the [N] hospital, she miscarried.
And for years she could not listen to the song Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones because
of the bad memories.
In [Ab] years later, she overcame that, she did a full 360 and actually recorded her own version
of [Bb] Gimme Shelter.
They say that the [G] miscarriage was caused by the [Ab] stress, by the [A] anxiety, by her tremendous
emotion that she put in that song.
So next time you hear Gimme [G] Shelter, be sure and listen to [Bb] Mary Clayton.
It's another story from Rayman's rock and roll memories.
