We recently did a cover of a band song called Acadian Driftwood for the tribute
album for the band and it was a great experience musically.
It was like going
inside of that band and meticulously trying to hear the way they sang every
every line and the chords to the song which are again are deceptively simple.
You would think oh I'll just play that but no it's very very and again the band
is another group where they sort of made it all up themselves you know and and we
could really relate to that aspect of it and to try and really get in there and
figure out what they did.
That was a that's what happens when you do
cover songs and you really pay attention to what the original version is you know
it's a great great exercise and it's fun.
And with Acadian Driftwood we had
actually had an experience with that particular song when it came out back
in the winter of 1976 I think it was and it was freezing cold and Maggie and I
had hitchhiked from Louisiana to New York and we were you know without any
money and didn't have jobs and stuff and we were staying on in someone's
apartment who was a friend of ours who had that record the band record with
Acadian Driftwood and that song is about the Canadian people being driven
out of their homes down to Louisiana and being kind of on the run and [D] you know
not welcomed there and [Ab] and the combination of the harsh winter and us
in our personal circumstances and that song we was almost like that song was
about us and we had a personal connection to it [N] so when that was the
song that we were asked to contribute on the band record that was when Susie
called me and said the song it's something called Acadian Driftwood and I
said oh my god that song that's like the one song that I felt we had a heart
connection with with that group and and my first response was oh that's gonna be
easy to do you know it's just like real simple chords and then when we got in
there with it it was not at all that easy.
