The Orphan is a two-part jig in the usual format two A's and two B's
and it's in E minor [Bm]
a nice mid paced medium paced tune and I believe I
recorded it with Jackie Daly on an album we did together called the eavesdropper
Jackie's a great accordion player from the southwest of Ireland
[C] the
[Bm] [Em] [Bm]

[F#] [G]
[N] so in my mind those two bars make up the first phrase what I would call the first phrase [Em] of the tune
[G]
[B] [E] I'll play that again
[G] [B] and the next phrase
[Bm]
[B] E A B A [F#]
[B] G E F [C] sharp so in the basic version of the Orphan I went through the notes and I don't
add many variations to this tune it's I see it as a kind of a slightly naive tune innocent tune
that's part of its charm so I use a few of the standard ornaments rolls little runs here and
there but I also try to [B] change the mood by changing the tone of things by adding a few
double stops and I probably slide here a few notes here and there so from the beginning
[F#]
[F#m] that F sharp and A [F#] [B] [G] [F#m]
[E] I usually hang on that and I play it gently because I'm trying to make it feel
full but at the same time not strong there's something vulnerable about playing
the chord gently it's a fuller sound but there's no sense of aggression in it
probably because it's my image of an orphan
that vulnerability needs to come through the tune I think to make it work well
[F#]
[F#m] [G] and then I follow it immediately with [A] another chord the G chord G and B
[B] [G#] and then A B A I tend to slide [B] the B slide up to the B and [G] [A] [Bm]
[A] [Bm] I try to make that note
rich but again not much attack I don't hit it
