The Nolans, [Ab] a bevy of Irish beauties straight out of that Las [D] Vegas of the North.
Blackpool.
The girls grew up in a true [G] showbiz family.
Their [Eb] folks were clubland [Em] crooners and the sisters were soon trying [A] to muscle in on the act.
[G]
[Am] The [Em] pressure [D] was reversed in our case.
It was us who pressured [G] our mum and dad into taking us along.
You know, and we'd [Db] say, is it my turn [G] tonight?
Can I go tonight?
And then at one point when we started working with our mum and dad, we were called the Singing Nolans, Blackpool's own Von Trapps.
[Gbm]
And this was no coincidence.
[G] Singing nuns [Gb] and Lady Hosen had a [Abm] special place in [D] the girls' [A] hearts.
These [D] are a few of [Ab] my favourite [Db] things.
The [Am] Sound of Music, I have to say, was our [Ab] favourite, favourite film.
We went to see it 18 times.
15 times.
18 times.
20 times.
I just related to the Von Trapps family.
I was watching us on [Abm] screen.
We used to come out of the cinema and go, we could do that.
And [Gb] we used to run over the hill holding [B] hands.
Do a deer.
Female deer, ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, my name, I call myself, mum, a long, long way to run.
But for the Nolans [Abm] to climb their mountain of fame, the family had to [G] make a sacrifice.
My mum and dad discussed it with the powers that be and they said there was more [Cm] scope really for six sisters rather than six sisters with [Abm] their mum and dad.
[Eb] [G] My mum and dad just, okay, they just stepped down, gave up.
[Abm] And so the [E] family troupe, the Singing Nolans, became [Em] simply the Nolans Sisters.
A [Gbm] producer from the BBC came in to see us [Dm] and he put us on the Cliff [G] Richards Show.
Reasons, one, they're six lovely sisters.
Two, they've got a brand new song.
Three, it's their very first time on the box.
So ladies and gentlemen, here they are, the Nolans Sisters.
[D]
The Nolans joined the glitter ball [G] family of light entertainment, [C] choreographed by the nation's favourite [G] spinster aunt, the BBC.
[C] And I think the BBC, [G] they kind of felt like we were their babies, you know, they owned us and they used to tell us what to do and what to wear.
I remember [Gb]
[G] green kind [Em] of glittery things.
[G] It was the weirdest material, it was like sponge, I don't know what it [C] was.
[D] [G]
[C] [G] Oh, they made us cat [Em] suits but they weren't fantastically [Am] made so they were a bit like romper suits.
They [D] were pink.
[G] I was crying, saying, I'm not wearing this, it's vile, [C] all my friends will [G] laugh at me, I was only 13.
Another [D] TV series we did with Vince Hill, we had [Em] orange halter neck dresses [D] on that were [G] awful and we [C] begged the [G] director, you know, but it was real, I know what's best, you know.
Then at the end of the year, we said, look, we're about to just do it, we got the bill.
That's the first time that we realised, oh, we're paying for the clothes, so we literally cut the clothes [Bb] up.
[Dm] So, [Eb] the Nolan sisters.
[G]
[Bb] Free to display their [Dm] own taste in clothing, the girls made it onto Top [Eb] of the Pops, only to encounter [Gm] the corporation's eccentric uncle.
[F]
[G] I stood next to Jimmy Savile and I was 14 [A] and [G] he was all over [F] me.
Ladies and gentlemen, there are more [G] Nolans than meet the eye.
You know, it's a bit like, oh, I don't think I like it.
[F]
But [G] it's funny because then you know it's [F] family, because I could see my sisters [Abm] glaring at him like, you touch her and we'll kill you.
And they would have, you know, and that's where family [B] come in.
[E]
[Gb] [B]
[E]
[Dbm] [Gb]
[B]
[E] I don't [Dbm] think any of us had a massive [Gb] urge to be famous.
[E]
The urge was more to [Gbm] be on TV.
[Ebm] [Gb]
It was fabulous, it's everything you [D] dream of.
[G]
[A]
[D] I didn't feel like we fit in very well.
We were [Gm] surrounded by punk groups at one time in the [D] charts.
[G] [D]
[Gm] [G] I remember there was a group called [D] The Skids.
[G]
[D] They spat [G] outside our dressing room as they were going past the door was open, they just spat on the floor outside our [E] dressing room.
[Gb]
I'm in the mood for [E] dancing went top five.
But even in their finest hour, Nolan family values [Gb] went against the tide of pop music and tabloid opinion.
[D] Back then, they weren't very kind to us.
And [Am] I remember one in particular, [G] the headlines, double page, Queens of Naff.
[Db] [E]
[Gb]
[Ebm]
[G] The Nolans were never going to be the Osmonds, they were never going to be the Jacksons.
They were from Ireland.
They were just family entertainment.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
[Am] And entertainers they are, Colleen hosted [G] this morning, [Ab] [E] Linda's starring [Am] in Blood Brothers, [D] and Bernie's left Brookie to be a sergeant on the bill.
I've [Ab] never ever once as a child or a teenager thought, I really want to be a pop star.
Here we are, [G]
happy golden days.
[Gm]
I don't think really we made an album that [G] I'm proud of.
I never ever, ever
