It's Rick here, hope you're all doing extremely well out there.
I know I am.
This is the first of this type of video I've done for quite a while.
I apologise for the delay.
I moved to a new place and basically it's taken me ages to get the new kind of shooting
set up done.
The lighting has been a pain in the arse to get right.
It's just one of those things so it's taken me ages to get things sorted but I think it's
working quite well now so be prepared for lots more videos to come.
Anyway we're going to talk about economy picking for speed today.
I hope you enjoyed that little flurry of notes at the start.
So I'm just going to explain exactly what I'm doing there in terms of both the right
and left hands.
And this is a perfect example of the kind of thing that I use just to kind of add a
bit of tension in a solo or to build tension you know with using speed.
Especially when ascending through a sequential pattern or a scale or arpeggio or whatever.
So we're going to take a look at that.
Even though I'm using economy picking as always you don't have to use economy picking.
This is pretty much what I do with this type of sequence and pattern.
But you can apply whatever picking pattern you want to this.
So let's get cracking shall we.
I'm miss saying all this stuff.
Okay so what we're going to do is we're going to start in the key of D minor.
We're going to do like a D minor pentatonic thing.
Three note per string.
So make sure you're au fait with all of those shapes.
I'm pretty sure if you're watching this kind of thing you'll know what I'm talking about.
Basically it's where we get a standard [Gb] minor pentatonic shape and play two shapes at the
same time to give us three notes per string.
[D] What we're going to do is ascend through this using a particular pattern.
But it follows the picking pattern kind of dictates what I'm playing here.
So let me show you what I mean.
[F] [Eb] I'm going to start with a down stroke [E] and we're going to play 10, [G] [F] 15, 13.
[D] Okay.
[Dm] So we go down, [F] up, down.
And then we're going to go to the next string.
So we're going to still in, it's all D minor [C] pentatonic.
[A] Okay.
[G]
And we're going to go down to the index finger.
[A]
Okay.
So that's the [Ab] actual basic pattern that we're going to shift through sets of [Dm] strings.
[A] [D] Shift, down, [G] up, down, [Am] down, up, down, [A] up, down.
And then when we're here [Bm] it starts the pattern [Gb] that we played here.
It's just a repetition of the same pattern.
[A]
[Dm] [A]
[Am] Let me do that slowly.
[G] [C] [D]
[E] In fact, actually what we're going to do here is play through three strings rather than
just two before we get the shift.
[G]
[Em] Shift.
[Dm] [C]
[A] This is where we get the shift on the [E] G string here.
So let me [Dm] play that again.
Down, [G] up, down, down.
[Am] [A] [Dm]
[C] Up, [G] down, down, up, down, [E] down.
So this part allows us to use economy picking through the A, D, and G string.
Down, up, down, [G] down, up, down, down, up, down.
[A] Shift.
Okay.
And we get the same thing.
Okay.
And that's across three strings.
[E] Okay.
Be careful of this one.
This is a bit of [Em] a challenge to get.
[B]
[E] [A] [Dm] [Am]
[B] So don't mess up like I just did there.
[A] So be sure.
[E] It's the index finger here that really [Dm] will dictate the shape that you play.
So [Abm] what I do is tend to focus on the movement [B] of the index.
[A] [E] [E] Okay.
Once we're here we do the shift [A] again.
So let me play that whole ascending pattern for you.
Okay.
Good.
We're right at the top here at fret 17.
Now we're going to [B] go straight to 22.
[F] We get this pattern.
[E] We're using bars here.
Up, up, down, [Am] down, [Dm] up, up, up, [Am] up, down.
Okay.
[E] So let me do it [A] from here.
[B] [C] Okay.
So [B] picking pattern.
[E] Up, up, down, [Dm] down, up, up, up, [Am] down.
I'm going to shift down here to fret 14.
[G]
[A] Sometimes I [D] actually hit that note.
Sometimes I hit that note.
It doesn't really matter.
It depends how I'm feeling when I [E] play the lick.
You know, you can add notes, take notes away.
It's up to you.
So from here, [A] [Am]
shift with an upstroke.
Then [D] we get down, down, down, [B] up, up, [Gm] down, [F] down, up.
[C]
That's [G] [A] it.
Sorry.
[G]
[A] Okay.
So that's again bollocks.
[Am] [Dm]
[Em] Okay.
Then we're going to shift down to the A minor arpeggio here.
[C] Following the same kind of idea, you [D] know.
[Dm] [C] [D] [Am]
[C] [Db] Then we finish with this,
[Bb] which [A] basically [Em] is the five of D minor, so A7.
[Db]
Okay.
[D] And that takes us back to the D beautifully.
Okay.
[E] So all together, nice and [D] slowly.
[A]
[Em]
[Db] [G]
[Bb] Okay.
That's the entire lick.
Like I said before, you don't have to play this lick note for note.
What I used to do is literally, I'd do it, you know, learn licks,
but then completely change them all or at least mess them up.
That's what I used to do.
And kind of that would lead me into something that was kind of uniquely,
you know, my kind of thing because I added my mistakes in there.
So, you know, I really encourage you to kind of, you know,
take little sections of them, change them around, change it all around.
You know, morph it into something else.
So this is just like a template for you to do whatever you want with,
you know, and that's, that's the great thing about these kinds of ideas.
You know, use your own creativity.
Just before I finish, make sure you head on over to my website,
check out all my downloadable content there.
There's a ton of stuff and it's a great way to support what I do.

Sorry.
[G] _ _
_ [A] _ Okay.
So that's again _ _ bollocks.
_ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _
_ [Em] Okay.
Then we're going to shift down to the _ A minor arpeggio here.
[C] _ _ _ Following the same kind of idea, you [D] know. _ _ _ _ _
[Dm] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [D] _ _ [Am] _
_ [C] [Db] Then we finish with this, _ _ _ _
[Bb] which [A] basically _ [Em] is the five of D minor, so A7.
_ _ _ _ _ [Db] _
Okay.
[D] And that takes us back to the D beautifully.
Okay.
[E] So all together, nice and [D] slowly.
_ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ [Db] _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] Okay.
That's the entire lick.
Like I said before, you don't have to play this lick note for note.
What I used to do is literally, I'd do it, you know, learn licks,
but then completely change them all or at least mess them up.
That's what I used to do.
And kind of that would lead me into something that was kind of uniquely,
you know, my kind of thing _ because I added my mistakes in there.
Just before I finish, make sure you head on over to my website,
check out all my downloadable content there.
There's a ton of stuff and it's a great way to support what I do.
So head on over, links are in the description box below.
All right, guys, hope you've enjoyed this video and I will catch up with you real soon.
Take it easy. _
