I'm [B] Aaron Dessner, I play in The National, this is my brother.
And we put together this record, Dark Was The Night.
I used to work for Red Hot for five years.
And it's a sister company, Funny Garbage, which is [E] a design company.
And we had the opportunity to work with them on this record
because we've known them for a long time.
And we also happen [F] to have known a lot of musicians that we could convince.
Hey.
Start it over.
[A] Hi, I'm John Carlin, I started the Red Hot organization 20 years ago.
I was an art critic in the East Village in New York.
And the 80s was a terrible time, it was great art,
but lots of people got sick before they knew what AIDS was.
And I saw a lot of the most creative people in my generation get sick and die.
And I was the lucky one, not only did I survive, but I got to do something interesting
and make people remember this terrible disease that affects people around the world
and at the same time make some great music.
We had a song that we had written that we knew probably [F] wouldn't really work [E] on one of our albums.
We've always loved Nico Muhly's stuff, [F] and so we invited him [Gm] to arrange it.
[C] The record [Am] Dark Was The Night is really almost more of a concept record than a conceptual [C] record.
It doesn't have a theme like covering the songs of one artist,
but it really has a coherent spirit that I think was really something that Aaron and Bryce brought to the table.
And [G] it was really finding out the identity of their generation,
like what [F] actually makes all these artists come [Am] together,
not just because there's an event [G] like Red Hot, but their creative collaboration.
It's almost like this [F] global community [Am] of creative people that are communicating with [G] each other,
even if they're not texting or emailing or [Am] talking on the phone,
they're [Em] talking to each other with their records.
[Am] And I always thought that the best music [Em] was really the music that artists [Am] made for other artists,
just like [Em] painters or writers.
You know, they want to reach [Am] an audience, but the real audience is [Bm] their peers,
the people whose work they admire.
So that's why [Em] doing collaborations on [C] these kind of records is [G] so exciting.
