Would you like A or [C] B?
[F#] B?
You want B?
[A#] As God is my witness, I [B] did have an A and a B in my mind.
I did not write [D] B.
[D] [A] [D]
[A] A was an [D] unreleased number that [A] nobody's ever heard
and everybody would hate.
It was [D]
[A] about a certain schism [D] within the church
in the 17th century in France.
Great big deal in the 17th century church.
[A] Oh [D] my!
There was much disagreement.
Many people left their rectories and their [A] abbeys over it.
[Am] You won't be hearing that one.
[D]
[A] [D] You'll be hearing a [F#] song by a country full [G] of Protestants.
[A] When I say by a country, I [G] mean by some people representing [A] that country.
[G]
[D] The DJ from Ace of Base [A] used to DJ.
[G] [F#] I think the indie kids were a little [B] embarrassed when that was what [Em] I was like.
They were like, [A] so how do you feel about being in [F#] Gothenburg?
I was like, has Ace of Base [G] been here?
Oh [Am] yes, Joker used to DJ here.
He's kind of a Nazi, you know?
I [D] was like, [Am] Joker used to [G#] DJ here?
[D]
[A] [D]
[A] [D] I've got a new life, you would hardly [A] recognize me.
[B] Wait, how the fuck is [C] this goddamn song going?
[A] I'm so glad, how could a person [G] like you bring me joy?
Why should I bother [D] when you're [A] not the one for me?
[G] [A] Isn't love enough?
I saw the sign.
[D] And it opened up [A] my eyes, I saw the sign.
Love is demanding without understanding.
Yeah, I saw the sign.
[G] And it opened [D] up my eyes, I saw the sign.
And no one's gonna drag you up to get into the [A] light where you [D] belong.
[B] I feel positively [G] certain, I've told you this story before.
[A] [D]
[G] [A] [D]
[G] [A] [D] But the first time Rachel Ware and I went out to the Midwest [A] to see if people
[D] wanted to hear [A] the Mountain Goats any place other [D] than [A] Pomona and San Francisco,
[D]
we went up to Columbus, Ohio.
There were 10 [B] people at that show, they seemed to [D] enjoy themselves.
And one of them was taping, you can still find the show if you really want to hear it.
And [A] then on the way back, we heard Ace of Base on the [D] radio, and the people who were driving with us
tried to change the station, and I was like, no [B] wait, wait, wait, wait, [D] that's Ace [A] of Base.
And they were like, what?
[D] I was like, no, that's my favorite [A] band.
[D] At the time, [B] the big bands in the indie world [D] were Pavement [A] and the Archers of [D] Loaf.
[C] But I personally was [G] an Ace of Base fan.
[A] [D]
[F#] So I made my case and we stopped at a Sam [A] Goody
in Bloomington where I was born, [D]
and we picked up the entire album, which I already owned
[D] back home in Claremont, but [E] you can't give enough [D] money to the Ace of Base, [A] no matter what you do.
And I slipped the [G] cassette into the tape deck [A] in the car, and we listened to that album for three hours straight.
Listen.
Under the pale moon for so many [D] years, I'd wonder who you are.
[F#] How could a [G] person like [A] you bring me joy?
[C] Under the pale moon [G] poetry, where I [A] see a lot of stars.
[D] [G] [D]
[B] No [F] [B]
[G]
one's gonna drag you [D] out.
