Hello it's me the ukulele teacher here to teach you how to play the moon song by Karen O
as performed by Scarlett Johansson in the movie Her.
So grab your uke, [Em] make sure it's in tune
[Am] and [N] get ready to play the moon song.
For this song you'll need the chords of D minor G C F and F
minor.
To play D minor put your first finger on the second fret of the fourth string, your second
finger on the second fret of the third string and your first finger on the first fret of the second
string and D minor should sound [Dm] like this.
To play the chord of G put your [F] first finger on the
second fret of the third string, your second finger on the second fret of the first string
and your third finger on the third fret of the second string and G should sound like [G] this.
And
to play the chord of C put your third finger on the third fret of the first string and C should
[C] sound like this.
[D] Now to play the chord of F you would normally put your first finger on the first
fret of the second string and your second finger on the second fret of the fourth string but for
this song I'm also going to suggest that you add your fourth finger to the third fret of the first
string so that F will now sound [F] like this.
And the [N] final chord you'll need is the chord of F minor.
To play F minor keep your fourth finger on the third fret of the first string, move your first
finger to the first fret of the fourth string and your second finger to the first fret of the second
string and F minor should sound like this.
[Fm] [G] Now the chords for this song are super simple it's just
D minor G C all the way through except the last line which is D minor G F F minor C.
So the first
thing I'm going to do is teach you a very simple strumming pattern then after that I'm going to
teach you how to finger pick the song.
So if you want to strum the song you can just play a very
simple down down up up down [Dm] up lilting pattern like this.
[G] [C]
[Dm] I'm lying [G] on [C] the moon [Dm] my dear [G] I'll be [C] there soon [Dm] it's a quiet and [G] [C] starry place
times [Dm] we're swallowed [G]
up in and then on the [Abm] F and F minor just play a downstroke [F] on each chord
space we're [Fm] here a million [C] miles away.
So that's how to [N] strum the moon song it's a very very easy
song.
So to make things more interesting I'm going to teach you the finger picking pattern that they
play in the movie.
To start finger picking you need to have the fingers on your right hand in
the right place.
You need to rest your thumb on top of the fourth string and then rest your first
second and third fingers underneath the third second and first strings so that if you were
to lift your fingers up you'd be softly pinching all the strings like this.
[C]
[A] Now that you've got
the fingers in the right hand in the right place I'm going to call out [Dm] the numbers of the fingers
that you need to pick.
So if I said thumb you would play thumb if I said one you would play
your first finger if I said two you would play your second finger and if I said three you would
play your third finger.
So the pattern you play on the D minor is one two one three two one two
like this one two one three two one two and the pattern you play on the G is exactly the same
[G] one two one three two one two and then the [G] pattern that you play on the C is very similar but it's a
two one three two one three two one three two one two.
You can let the three ring each time you play it
like [C] this one two one three two one three two one three two one two.
So let's play the D minor G
[Dm] C one two one three two one [G] two one two one three two one [C] two one two one three two one three two
one three two one [Dm] two.
[G] [C]
[N] The only bit that's different is the last line.
Now the D minor and G are the same
as in the rest of the song and for F and F minor you don't even need to finger pick you just do one
down stroke with your thumb and then as you go back to [F] the C you play the same finger picking
pattern that you played all the way through the song.
Space we're [Fm] here a million [C] miles away.
So [C] let's put the whole thing together with finger [Dm] picking.
I'm lying [G] on [C]
[Dm] my dear I'll be
[C] there soon.
It's a [Dm] quiet [G] and [C] starry place.
Times [Dm] we've swallowed [G] up [Am] [Fm] in space.
We're here a million [C] miles away.
And that's how to play the Moon [A] Song by Karen Oh.
