[A] [E] [N] Hi guys, you're watching Balcony TV Melbourne.
This is Maggie, this is Anita and this is
Elsie and they are the May Trio.
How are you ladies?
Not bad.
That's good.
Thank you for coming on.
What song are you going to play for us?
We're going to play a song called Caroline.
Beautiful, go for it.
[G] [Gm] [Eb]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Bb] [Gm] [Eb]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Gm] He asked [Eb] her if she wanted [Gm] white picket fence and she was scared [Eb] to death when she realised
[Gm] what he meant and she was [Eb] scared of the wild and sickness [Gm] and in health and she was scared
of what [Eb] would happen if she carried on [F] by herself.
[Gm] Oh my Caroline, [F] [Gm] by the stars [F] that shine, [Gm] by the gods in the sky you [Eb] shall be forever [Bb] warm and [Gm] dry.
[Eb]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Gm] She had her first [Eb] child in her first [Gm] year on her own, she keeps the house [F] clean and
she dreads the nights when [Gm] he comes home.
He never [Eb] notices that [Bb] something [Gm] wasn't right,
he can't see anything [Eb] when it is out [F] of sight.
Oh my Caroline, [Gm] by the stars [F] that shine, [Gm] by the gods in the sky you [Eb] shall be forever [Bb] warm and [Gm] dry.
[Eb]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Gm] She takes the kids [Eb] to church on Sundays at [Gm] his request, she prays to God [Eb] she can't believe
it, [Gm] hoping for the best and the world [Eb] is growing older.
[Gm] With every passing day sometimes she's [Eb] singing from rooftops, [Gm] hiding [F] far away.
Oh my Caroline, [Gm] by the stars that shine, [Dm] by the gods in the sky you shall [Eb] be forever [Bb]
warm and dry.
[F] Oh [Gm] my Caroline, [F] by [Gm] the stars [F] that shine, [Dm] by the gods in the [F] sky you shall [Eb] be forever
[Bb] warm and [Gm] dry.
[Eb] [Bb] [Gm]
[Gm]
[Eb] [Gm] [F]
[Eb] [G]
[G] [N]
Well, that was amazing.
Thank you ladies.
Now, who wrote that song?
I did.
What's it about?
I wrote it after I went on what I think retrospectively was a date with a guy who [Bb] told me his life
plan which was to get married and have kids, finish his degree, buy a house, put the wife
and kids in the house and then get a job that took him [N] overseas so he would travel the world
and leave them at home.
So that's a song that I wrote for his wife, whoever she is.
I hope you're watching.
I really hope you are.
Maybe she's watching with the kids and he's overseas.
Cool, amazing.
So do you all [E] write the songs together?
Is that usually how it works or do you just bring it together?
We sort of [D] write them ourselves.
The deal is [Em] if you write it you get to sing it and [N] the others have to work out what to do.
Ah, awesome, cool.
Now, Maggie and Elsie, you are sisters.
Yes we are.
So I assume that you've been playing music together for quite some time?
You could say that.
We had a family band for many years.
Dad and Mum?
Oh yes, and younger sister.
We took off around the country in a convey van and played in campsites.
Beautiful, just that old story.
Classic story.
Awesome, that's awesome.
And where did you meet this bombshell?
We poached her.
Yes!
Awesome, but where did you meet her?
In Melbourne?
We met at festivals around the place.
Cool, [Eb] and now you're this incredible trio.
It's really wonderful.
I remember, I saw you guys play for the first time a couple of months ago.
And I was sitting on the ground and I was looking up at you.
And you started playing and pretty much from the first bar my [G] face started hurting because I was smiling that much.
And so I was forced to buy your album which you released earlier this year, [Eb] Housewarming. We did.
It's very exciting.
It is.
And it's just beautiful, girls.
It's really, [N] really wonderful.
So what do you have planned for the rest of this year and next year?
Scotland in January.
It'll be colder than it is out here, this album.
We'll get used to it.
Are you playing a festival in Scotland?
It's called Celtic Connections.
Lots of our favourite trad musicians play there.
Great, that's really exciting.
Have you played over there before?
No, not at all.
We haven't gone very far out of Melbourne.
Or Victoria.
Awesome, and then?
Then in February we're going over to America.
That's huge, guys.
That's amazing.
And you're playing Port Ferry as well?
We are.
We have to buy some small chairs to sit on in the audience.
Yes, that's right.
I've never actually been, but I'm going to go.
Perhaps that comment didn't make any sense.
No, I do.
I get it.
Lots of [Eb] people sit on chairs.
Is that right?
Yes.
Bring your own images.
Okay, cool.
Awesome.
Well, very exciting.
Thank you so much, ladies, for coming on.
This is the May Trio, and thank [E] you for watching Balcony TV Melbourne.
