[Gb] Though we've gained [Eb] a hero's name, [Gb] we're all [Abm] cripples just the same.
[Gb] And the scars [E] we bear [Eb] will testify [Ab] to [Gb] the pain [E] we've found [Eb] beyond the sky.
_ [Ab] We set out [Gb] in our starship [Abm] in _ 2049, [B] sent [Abm] to fly the galaxy, [Ebm] another [Abm] Earth to find.
[B] They put us [Abm] in our coffin and [Ebm] gently [Abm] closed the lid.
And if I'd [Gb] known [Abm] then what I know now, I'd have wished I'd wake up dead.
_ And so we [Gb] flew a thousand [Abm] years through interstellar space.
[B] Light years [Abm] separated us from [Ebm] the human [Abm] race.
Then at last we slowed as we [Ebm] approached our [Abm] target star.
And [Gb] now we [Abm] find the reason that we've [Ebm] traveled [Abm] so far.

[Gb] Though we've [E] gained a [Eb] hero's [Abm] name, [Gb] we're all [Abm] cripples just the same.
And the [Gb] scars we [E] bear will [Eb] testify [Ab] to the [D] pain we've [E] found beyond [Eb] the sky. _
[Abm] As we awoke [Gb] from frozen sleep, [Abm] we each knew what to do.
We'd scan the sky about the star for a planet shining blue.
We'd pull into an orbit and [Ebm] check [Abm] her atmosphere.
And [Gb] run a [E] half a [Gb] hundred [Ab] tests to [Ebm] see if [Abm] she proved fair. _
We'd monitor [Gb] her radio [Abm] so that we could see
if there were any aliens who'd come there before we.
Then from our receiver, a [Ebm] tiny voice [Abm] we heard.
[Gb] It spoke [E] to us [Ebm] in English and we [Abm] understood each word. _

And man spread to a thousand stars while we were half alive.

_ _ They told us we [Gb] were heroes, [Abm] pinned medals to our chests.
[B] And they gave us [Abm] a fine pension and sent us off to rest.
For we're anachronisms from another place and time.
And so [Gb] they have retired [Abm] us though [Ebm] we're all [Abm] still in our prime.

[Abm] And of the [Gb] ten men of our [Abm] crew, but two of us remain.
More trapped here in the future, we all have gone insane.
We knew when we set out that we'd be gone a thousand years.
[Gb] But we never thought [Gb] we'd end [Abm] up as unwanted _ pensioneers.
And soon we [Gb] too will follow where [Abm] the other eight have gone.
And then our long sad journey will finally be done.
In the next room waiting is my time-lost lonely wife.
And I'll see her one last time as we [Ebm] take [Abm] each other's life.
