[F] [E] Welcome to [N] Flashback Favorites.
I'm Music Mike.
Thanks for joining me again.
I've played our featured song today to several people and asked them what they thought.
Most people thought it was The Supremes.
Some said Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
And then others said, ah, it's just one of those Motown groups.
Well, none of those is right.
The Flirtations got their start as the Gypsies.
They were three sisters and a friend from South Carolina that went up to New York City and recorded a few records.
They eventually changed their name to The Flirtations and as a trio in 1967 made their way to England
where they were discovered by record producer Wayne Bickerton.
Wayne produced and wrote their first single, but it's their second single we're featuring today.
You know, The Flirtations are a talented bunch of ladies.
Excellent singers.
But I think you'd have to agree what makes this record attractive is the production quality.
This song has one of the best introductions of any 60s song I've ever heard.
That pounding piano.
It's got lots of compression and reverb and those outstanding British horns.
This is a top notch tune.
It made it up to number 34 on the U.S. charts in 1969.
Let's check it out from The Flirtations, Nothing But a Heartache on Flashback Favorites.
