Hi and welcome to my tutorial
The Difference Between the Blues Scale and the Minor Pentatonic Scale
The guitar is tuned standard E, A, [D] D, G, [Abm] B, E
[F] I get a lot of electric guitar students to ask
What is the difference between the blues scale and the minor pentatonic scale?
Well there is very little difference between the two
Both are used in blues and rock quite a bit
The minor pentatonic scale is a five note scale
For this example we are going [Gb] to use A minor pentatonic
Which is at the fifth fret [A] of the guitar
If we pick the notes on just this fret alone
We will have A, D, [G] G, [C]
C, [E] E and then we are back [A] to A
[Gb] So our five notes were A, D, G, C and E
If we play the pentatonic scale in the [Eb] traditional fashion
It will be played this [A] way
[C] For
[E] [G] [A] [C]
[D] [Am]
that scale we are going to the low E string, fifth fret
Going [A]
five to eight
The A [D] string, five to seven
[Gb] The D [G] string, five to seven
[A] [D] The G string, [Am]
five to [D] seven
[F] The B [E] string, [D] five to eight
And the high E string, five to eight
[Am] In most cases folks will play it [Em] [D]
[E]
[A] that way
Up in pitch and back down in pitch
So that's one, [C] two, [D] three, [E] four, [G] five
And we are [A] back at the root which is A
So that's A, [Ab] C, [D] D, E, [G] G, [A] A
If we were to play something [Eb] using the A minor pentatonic scale
It might sound like this
[D] [C]
[A] [D]
[E] [Cm] [F]
[Dm] [A]
[D] [F]
[Cm] [Em]
[A] [E]
[D]
[Am]
[Ab] Now let's look at the blues scale
Our blues scale would [A] be
[C] [D]
[Eb] [E] [G] [Am]
[D] [D]
[A] [D]
And back down in pitch
[E] So [Em]
[D] [Em]
[C] [A]
our notes were A, C, [D] D, E [Eb] flat, [Em] E, G, [A] A, [C] C, D, [D] E [Eb] flat, [Em] E, [D] G, [A] A, C
[D]
So [Eb] the difference between the two scales was one note, E flat
E flat is here and here
We simply added E flat to the [A] mix
[C] [E]
There [Eb] it is
And then [Em] there [D]
it is again
[A]
[Bb] So here's an example of what it sounds like to play the blues scale
Across an A minor backing track
[C]
[D] [B] [C]
[Em]
[G] [E]
[D]
[Dm] [Am]
[E]
[D] [Dm]
[Am] [D]
[G] [D] [Cm]
[Dm] [Em] [Am]
[C] So there you are
The difference between the blues scale and the minor pentatonic scale is one note
Now this works in any key that you might move up or down the fretboard
Here it was A minor pentatonic
We go down, A flat minor pentatonic
Up [Eb] to here, C minor pentatonic
[Gbm] Doesn't [Gm] [Fm]
[Gm] [Cm]
[Gb] matter where you play it on the fretboard
Thanks for stopping by
And have a great day
