[Bbm] I have so many ideas when I'm driving.
So I [Eb] drive a lot and I have a little [Ab] notebook somewhere.
Writing while [Gb] driving on the highway is one of the most [N] dangerous things you can do.
It's similar to texting and driving but harder because you have to like hold the paper down on the steering wheel and write and have the pen.
The pen doesn't work.
So you're digging like in the back seat for another pen and you're freaking out because you don't want to forget something.
I don't remember the first time I wrote a card.
I just notice that when I'm driving, especially on the highway, that I just get ideas.
I get loads of ideas.
It's the same thing about that sort of not-needing-speed.
That [Ab] weird level of concentration you have when you're driving leaves a part of your brain open [E] for that kind of stuff.
[F] I guess you're sort of amusing yourself because [N] it's pretty boring, you know?
So ideas just tend to come at that time.
And instead of telling them, stop coming, just write them down and then you're cool.
It's good to tape [G] record yourself but here's the thing about [Gm] tape recording yourself talking.
[D] You never want to listen to it back.
So it's better [Bb] to write stuff down because it's not as annoying.
It's a lot easier to look at.
I'm not telling you that you should do this because I don't want you to get in an accident.
You know what?
It's mostly like lines.
I wouldn't say that I craft [B] a song from beginning to end [C] while on the road.
But you come up with some cool stuff.
And so [Db] the Dead Weather record, since we
[D] haven't really been in the same room together [Fm] too much,
a lot of times
[B] the guys will hand me a whole bunch of music and then I'll put it on in the car and I'll go for a ride and then I'll come [C] back and then I'll record.
[N] It's amazing what happens if you just kind of let yourself go.
Open your mouth and start singing more.
Playing at the same time with everybody else.
You kind of just let go of that energy and suddenly before you know it, you have a song and it's like a gift.
You don't know where it came from.
Which is incredibly exciting.
That never gets old, that feeling of just being like, oh shit, where'd that come from?
