[Cm] The first [G] sort of yeah the concept of the big gig I went to three in
1970 I think it's 1974 actually you're really good if someone's gonna check so you know it's 1975
But I think it's 1974 I went to see the Rolling Stones Earl's Court
And I went to see Bowie Earl's Court.
It was on the [F] station to station tour so that will [B] pin it down
So [Em] it's probably 75 actually and I went to see Elton John
At Wembley and in fact Elton John was really really good
But I thought the yellow brick road album was actually like really good album
I must admit I'm not a big Elton John fan
I just want to make that clear, but I think they're still think the albums got some great songs in it
And the Rolling Stones were amazing actually
Bowie was really disappointed.
I have to say though what he played was genius
but he played 40 minutes and didn't do an encore and I was I'd saved up so much to buy the tickets and
traveled up from Crawley and like
And I was sitting there like ah and then he ended and the lights went on and it taught me a big lesson
I thought this is wrong however good you are
This is like really short changing the people that are really high up
I've always remember that when I'm on stage and I look up and I think
They're the people that have probably traveled like a really long way and saved up to come see this and that's why we've had this like
Sort of work ethic that the cure have although it is enjoyable
It's not really work, but it's kind of honestly it's come from that one experience
I think well because I wanted to go on all night.
I was so disturbed by it
I sat there and only in a cinema and the lights got anything like that
You just don't want it to end because you've seen something really really good
It's that feeling I sat there and I was moved out and it stuck with me.
That's wrong
There is a connection [N] through tonight
France Vernon very different again, but in our last encore tonight of like all you know
You know the very first stuff we ever did not from the first album.
I kind of hear
You know it's that choppy and melody and stuff
Crystal cast I thought that was really powerful as well.
I mean it's like I say to him after it's
So utterly different to what we do, but in a funny way
Like the people in the crowd that you know maybe cure fans in the crowd really responded to it.
It was a surprise
When I was first and have approached
With the idea that we would
Be offered this award.
I kind of did a double take in my head because then there's probably a period.
I don't know maybe
A bit longer than 10 years ago when people
Pretty when Britpop started when that all kind of happened so it's like
95 96 that was probably we were stock was at its lowest in this country anyway
We were perceived as like the old guard which for me was like really kind of bizarre you know
But I could understand why you know, but it was the first time
I felt my age I thought you know we've been doing this for like for more than 20 years
And I suddenly felt that we'd been squeezed out, and I thought this is
It's nothing to do with music it's nothing to do with what we're doing we just don't fit and then I
Didn't think that the cure would ever really
Reestablish themselves up to that point it was all right to like the cure and lots of bands kind of name-checked us and all through
The you know the late 80s and into grunge and stuff like bands are very happy to kind of name-check the cure
Suddenly with Britpop they weren't it's like we were before no you know it's not that band
but now it's going to come back again and
Bands are very happy to like the cure
