Hey [G] guys, my name is David D'Amuzio and I'm going to teach [Bb] you how to play the song
Just What [G] I Needed by The Cars.
This is the chord progression used in the song.
And the other tutorial I'm going to do [Ab] is going to be on how to play the solo [G] and the lead parts.
Okay?
So this is how to play the chords that you need to know.
It's going to start off and the intro is [F] actually just vamping, just plays an E chord.
It [G] just does it sort of rhythmically, an E power chord.
But we're going to [Ab] start straight into the verse.
[B] And the verse does this progression right [G] here.
It goes E, [Bb] I'm going to just assume you know how to play your [F] power chords already.
So E [Em] power chord to [B] B power chord [Db] to C sharp power chord [Eb] to A flat power chord.
And does [G] that three times.
Again, that [B] progression is E [G] to B to C sharp to A flat.
It does that progression three times to the verse.
And then after the third time it changes slightly and does [B]
E [A] to B to A flat [B] to A one time.
Okay?
So I'll play [N] through that, the whole thing.
This is the verse.
[E] E [Bbm] to B [B]
[Db] to C sharp [Bb] to A flat.
[E] E [B] to B [Db] to C sharp [Eb] to A flat.
This is the third time [Em] now.
E to [B] B [Db] to C sharp [Eb] to A flat.
And now here's where it changes [E] and it goes E [B] to B [Eb] to A flat [B] to A.
Alright?
And after it does that the first [Bb] time, then it goes into [B] the synth, the keyboard [Abm] solo.
The wah wah [G] wah wah wah wah wah wah.
It does that thing, [Bb] okay?
And that progression [B] is just a little slightly different but not much.
[Em] It goes E to [B] B [Db] to C sharp [Bb] to A flat.
So just the same as you did before.
But then the second time it [B] does it, it [Em] then goes E [B] to B [Db] to C sharp [A] to A.
Alright?
So E to B [B] to C sharp to A the second [B] time.
Alright?
So for the keyboard solo, it goes E to B to C sharp to A flat.
Then E to B to C sharp to A.
[G] Then it goes back into the verse again, does the same [B] progression.
And then the chorus progression [A] goes like this.
[B] This is how to play the chorus.
It goes [E] E, B,
[A] A, [Dbm] C [A] sharp, [B] B.
[Gb] And then it goes [Eb] E, B, [A] A, [Dbm] C sharp.
And doesn't [B] go to the B the second time, okay?
So this is the total progression.
I'll play it for [E] you once.
[A] [Db] [Em]
[B] [A] [Db]
[E] [Am]
[E] [Db]
[Abm] You might actually [G] notice that the first [Gb] part, it sounds a lot like Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
There's also [C] other songs that do the exact same progression.
But it's basically [G] the same as Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar.
That [B] first little part.
Okay?
So again, that's [E] this chorus.
You play E [B] to B.
And you just play those one [E] time.
So that's just one stroke on A, [B] one stroke on B.
And then two strokes, two down strokes, [A] twice as fast on A.
And then [Bb] same thing on C sharp.
And then same thing [B] on B.
And then goes back to [Ab] the same thing.
So [E] do that like this.
[B] E, B, [A] A, [Dbm] [B] C sharp, B.
[A] It's a little bit hard to say and do at [Em] the same time.
But that's it.
E, [B] B, [A] A, [Db] [B] C sharp.
[E] [B] E, [A] B, A, [B] C sharp, B.
[Em] Alright?
And then the second time, it's E, [B] B, [A] A, [Db] C sharp.
[A] And does it again.
[B] E, [A] B, A, [B] C sharp, [Em] B.
E, [B] B, [A] A, [Db] C sharp.
[G] Alright?
And that's how the chorus ends.
Now, the only difference, [B] it just repeats all of [G] those throughout the rest of the song,
except for the chorus.
The chorus
I'm sorry, not the chorus.
It repeats those all throughout the rest [B] of the song, except for the guitar solo.
The guitar solo has a different progression going underneath it.
It's still the same, sort of, [Ab] as what we've done already, but I'll just [G] teach you.
The guitar solo progression [G] is [E] [B] E, B, [Dbm]
C sharp, [Eb] A flat.
[E] And then [B] E, B,
[Db] C [A] sharp, A.
[B] And it does that progression [G] twice.
That [E] again is [B] E, B, [Db] C [Eb] sharp, A [E] flat.
[B] E, [Db] B, C [A] sharp, A.
It does it again, because it goes [E] through that progression twice.
E, [Db] B, C sharp, [Eb] A [Em] flat.
[B] E, B, [Db] C [A] sharp, A.
[B] Alright, so that's how to play all of the [A] chords needed for [Ab] Just What I Needed by The Cars.
I'm going to teach [G] you how to play the solo and lead.
I think there's one little lead lick other than the solo as well.
In my next tutorial.
I hope this helped you guys [Fm] out.
