[N] In [B] our Making of a Hit series, we're going to take you way back to about this era.
Follow me over here to the [F#] jukebox.
The year [Bm] 1966, it's a group called the Buckinghams, a thing [G] called Kind of a Drag coming at you, babies.
[D] Kind of a [Am] drag,
[D] when your baby don't love [G] you.
Kind of a [B]
drag, [D] when you know she's been [C] untrue.
In 1966, in the [D] midst of the British [F#] invasion, five Chicago natives changed [B] their band's name from the pulsations to the English-sounding Buckinghams.
Based on some local success, they signed on with [Am] a small independent record label, [Bm] USA, and [F] cut this song, Kind of a Drag.
[C] [A#]
But if there ever [B] was a long shot to hit the charts, Kind of a Drag was it.
Even the band had mixed feelings.
I thought it was the worst thing that we recorded.
[A] I swear.
When they said they were going to release Kind of [B] a Drag, I started laughing.
I said, that thing's a stone.
It just didn't get, kind of a drag.
It just didn't make it.
[Bm] It was a [B] wimpy tune.
But it had a certain thing happening, [Bm]
and it had a sound.
[G] It was a [G#] sound.
[C#] [Bm] The sound was pop, with horns, [B] which at the time was rather unique.
But USA Records waited nearly a year to release the song, and during that year, the band's contract had expired.
We fired our manager.
[Bm] One of the [A#] members in the band, I can't remember now if we fired him, or he was a keyboard player, or if he [D] decided to quit.
[F#] We didn't have a booking [B] agency.
We weren't really working at the time.
And finally, USA released Kind of a Drag, [C#] and it just didn't.
[G#]
Took off [B] is right.
After just seven weeks, Kind of a Drag went to number one.
And the [C] boys from Chicago [A#m] suddenly had a song hotter than the Rolling Stones' Ruby Tuesday and [B] the Monkees' I'm a Believer.
It was a great, great record.
It had a happy sound.
[G] It was one of those things [A#] that I was proud of, because the Beatles were so hot, the Stones, everything was happening British.
And [B] yet, here comes this Chicago group, still making it.
[G#] [C#]
I [B] still remember sitting in my hotel room in New York and having the number one record in the country, and not having [Bm] a manager or a record company yet.
It happened to be recorded right for the time, and it [B] had everything going for it, and it just happened.
[C#]
