Hey, guitar friends, my name is [N] Robbie Trujillo.
Thanks for being here and learning another one with me today.
I'm here to help you become a better guitar player and learn how to play your favorite
country songs on guitar.
[G] Today I'm doing a lesson on Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton.
[E] The chords we're going to play on this one are E, B [Bm] minor, and [A] A.
And I'm also going
to play this A chord with just my first finger barring the second fret.
And the reason for that is we're going to be doing a hammer-on here on this [F#] A chord,
and we're going to [A] be hammering on [C#m] the second string from [D] the second fret to the third fret,
and [Em] the fourth string from the [F#] second fret to the [A] fourth fret.
[D] [A]
The strumming part for the intro is going to start on the A chord, so here's how we
would strum the intro.
[Em] [Bm]
[A] [D] [A]
The strumming pattern I'm doing is down, down, up, down, up.
[D] [A]
[E] Now let's learn the lead part.
We'll start on the sixth string open.
Pick that, [F#] then pick the second fret, [A] then the fifth string open, and then fifth string
[B] second fret, and we're going to slide up to the fourth [C#] fret.
[E] [F#] [A] [C#]
Then we'll come back down to the second fret, slide up again, and [C#m] [B] then slide down, then
[A] open up the fifth string, then [C#] we're going to slide up again, [B] then come back down to
the second fret, then we're going to slide up again twice, [C#]
then pick once, and slide
[B] back down, then slide back up one [C#] more time, and come back down, [B] [A] then open up the fifth
string, and then we can start our strumming there.
[D] [A]
[Em] So here's that straight through one more time.
[A] [C#]
[B] [A] [C#] [B]
[C#] [B]
[C#] [B] [A] [D]
And [A] here's our first verse.
Used to spend my nights out [Bm] in a bar room.
Liquor was the only love [A] I'd known.
[D] [A]
But you rescued me from reaching for the [Bm] bottom.
Brought me back from being too [A] far gone.
[D] [A]
[E] And you can go to the E chord [A] right before we go into the chorus, back to the A.
[E] [A] More as smooth as Tennessee [Bm] whiskey.
More as sweet as [A] strawberry wine.
[D] [A] More as warm as [Bm] glass brandy.
I'll stay strong on your love all [A] the [D] time.
[A] [A] [C#]
And throughout this song, if you just want to [A] use this position for the A chord and not
do the hammer-ons, you can just stay on that A chord.
Here's how we play the next verse.
I've looked for love in all the same old [Bm] places.
Found the bottom of the bottles always dry.
[A] [D] [A]
But when you poured out your heart, I [Bm] didn't waste it.
Cause there's nothing like your love to get [A] me high.
[E] More [A] as smooth as Tennessee [Bm] whiskey.
More as sweet as [A] strawberry wine.
[D] [A]
More as warm as glass [Bm] brandy.
I'll stay strong on your love all [A] the [D] time.
[A]
Then we [C] have our instrumental break and then we play through the chorus one more time and
finish up the [A] song.
Hopefully this was a helpful lesson for you.
Thank you so much for being here.
