Hi, welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com. I'm Ian Walsh.
Today we're working on a fiddle
tune called the Temperance Reel.
I used to play this and still do as an Irish reel and
I've heard it played a lot in the bluegrass circuit [G] so I thought I'd do a bluegrass oriented
lesson today for you on this tune.
It has two parts.
We're in standard tuning.
It's
in the key of G and it goes to E minor in the second part.
Here's a free sample of
it.
I hope you enjoy.
[Em] [G]

[D] [Em]
[D] [Em]
[D] [C]
[G]
[Db] TEMPERANCE [Eb] REEL
[G] [Ab]
[Eb] [G] [Gm] [G]
So that's two so far, the opens and the two in the middle.
Let's look at an E minor for
these two strings.
We have an E and a B played [E] together.
This will be for anything over the
E minor which happens halfway through the first part and starts off the second part.
So we have a B and an E played together.
You can see in that shot of my left hand I have
my fingernail almost pointing directly at my face.
It's just off to the left a little
bit.
And the more you can turn your finger to go flat, the better you're going to get
the fifth double stop covered right there, the E and the B.
Like that.
[F] Let's move on
to the A and the E string for some double stops.
You have your B [E] and an E.
You'll be
starting off the second part with that double stop.
And then if you want to make a G, just
add in a [G] G.
[Eb] [G] So we have a couple there.
Let's review.
G and D.
G and B.
[Em] E and B.
B and E.
B and G.
[D] Now, the beginning of this tune, we start off with an eighth note, a pickup
note.
So I would count it in like this.
One, two, three, four.
There'll be a quick note
there.
One, two, three, four.
[G] And we start off with G, F, G.
[A] We move very quickly across
the strings here.
[Bm]
[D] That's A, B, D.
Then to the E string.
[G]
Okay.
E, F, G, F, G.
[D] We have
an A in there.
And let's just cycle through that series of notes a few times.
One, two,
three, [G] four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
One, two,
three, four.
Good.
Alright.
We're going to move on to the next section of this tune.
It goes over the E minor.
