Welcome to American Music Shop.
It's a great pleasure to be here with you and to be presenting music by the writers who really formed Nancy Griffith as a songwriter.
I have a new album coming out called Other Voices, Other Rooms and all the writers who are on the record are here tonight.
This next writer wrote a song about a woman named Caroline and my middle name is Caroline.
I first heard this song when I was a young teenager growing up in Texas.
Without this man who is by far the finest songwriter that the state of Texas ever gave birth to, there would be no Nancy Griffith.
Townes Van Zandt.

the name she gave was [D]
[A] Caroline, [D] the daughter
[A] of a miner.
[D] And her ways were free and [C#m] it seemed [F#m] to me [E] sunshine walked [D] beside [Bm] her.
[D] [A]
Oh, she'd come from Spencer [D]
across [A] the hill, [D] said her pa [A] had sent her.
[D] As the cold was low [C#m] and soon [F#m] the snow [E] would turn the [D] skies to winter.
Well, [A]
she said she'd come [D] to [A] look for work.
[D] She was not [A] seeking favors for [D] a dime a day [C#m] and a place [F#m] to stay.
[E] She turned those [D] hands to labor.
[A]
The times were hard, Lord, [D]
and the [A] jobs were few.
[D] All through [A] Tecumseh Valley, [D] she asked around [C#m] and a job [F#m] she found.
She [E] found a bar for [D] Gypsy Sally.
[A]
All she saved enough [D] to get [A] back home [D] when spring [A] replaced the winter.
[D] But her dreams were denied.
[C#m] Her pa [F#m] had died.
[E] A lot of word come [D] down from Spencer.
[A]
She took to pouring [D] [A] out on the street, [D] her love lost [A]
inside her.
[D] And it was many a man [C#m] who turned [F#m] and [E] gave himself [D] beside her.
The [A]

Well, they found her down [D]
beneath [A] the stairs [D] that led to [A] Gypsy Sally's.
[D] In her hand when she died [C#m] was a [F#m] noted cry, [E] fare thee well, [D] Tecumseh Valley.

Thanks, everyone.
