Something really unusual for you now.
A young lady from Sydney who moved to New
York City at the age of 18 and has taken the jazz music scene in the Big Apple by
Storm, playing an instrument that I guess is a little bit unusual for a young
lady to take up, but in so doing has been dubbed the future of [C#] bass.
Her name is
Tal Wilkenfeld.
Lovely to have you with us.
Thank you.
[F] You left school today at 16.
Yep.
Moved to New York City at 18.
Well I actually went to LA straightaway when I was 16.
Wow.
[D] Yeah.
Why?
Um, because [N] I was sick of high school and I wanted to play music
full-time.
You were playing guitar in those days.
Mm-hmm.
What made you switch
to the bass?
Because I was like playing all this groove stuff on guitar and
everyone was like, you just think like a bass player, just switch to bass.
That is
an unusual instrument for a young lady to take up, isn't it?
Yeah, I guess so.
It suited me, my
personality.
So what, what do you mean by that?
I don't know, I don't know, I guess
I'm unusual.
Well the bass is a real sort of driving instrument.
I mean in rock
bands a lot of people kind of make fun of the bass player, but in, unkindly, but
in jazz [G#] it's really just as important [F] as anything else.
Some would say more so.
Yeah, I think [G] everyone's [G#] kind of equal when it comes to playing an instrument.
So New York, you're playing in all these clubs, Chick Corea, the Allman Brothers, I
mean so many great names, so many people have [G#m] hailed you as the next big thing.
It's [N] terrific, isn't it?
Thank you.
Yeah.
The album is called Transformation.
Tal is here with her band, Keith [C#] and Vinnie, who are just two of the hottest
jazz players you're ever going to hear.
Put your hands [G#] together everybody and be
dazzled [G] by the talent of Tal [A] Wilkenfeld.
