SWINGIN' ON A STAR - UKULELE LESSON / TUTORIAL by "UKULELE MIKE" chords

[F#m]
[N] Hi there, in lesson number 10 we're going to sing a song, an old classic favorite of
our crooner Bing Crosby, Swinging on a Star.
Now it uses three 7th chords, an E7, [E] [C#] an A7, [A]
and a [D] D7.
[D#m] Then we'll throw a [G] G in there and a [C] C.
Now [D#] the E7 chord is played by putting the index
finger on the first fret of the fourth string, put the middle finger on the second fret
[G#] of the third string, put the ring finger on the second fret of the first string, [E]
and there's
our E7 chord.
A7 [C] is much easier, just put [G] the index finger on the first fret of the third [A] string.
[N] D7 is that barre chord that we learned in a couple of lessons before this, we barre
across the second fret with our index finger, remember keep it straight and flat, and put
your middle [D] finger on the first string third fret.
Now there's an [D#m] optional D7 you can use as well, I just like this [D] one better, but the
optional [B] D7 is played this way.
Make an A minor, like [F] middle [F#] finger on the second fret of the fourth [A#] string, then put
your ring finger on the second fret of the [F#] second string, that's another D7, you can
use that as well.
[B] [D#] And then our [G] G chord.
Now we use a swing pattern on this, but there's [N] a little variation on this.
To give this the swing Bing Crosby kind of feel, I would suggest doing a little technique
like this, where you play this chord and you lift the pressure off the strings, but don't
lift the fingers off the strings, just lift the pressure.
When you do that, it mutes the strings momentarily like [E] this.
So you get this kind of sound.
[F#] Now when you add that to a swing, it [B] sounds like this, swing [E] shuffle.
[A]
[D] [G]
[E] Would you like to swing [A] on a star?
[D] Carry moonbeams home [G] in a jar?
[E] And be better off [C#] than you are?
[Bm] [G#] Or would you [G] rather be a mule?
A mule [C] is an [G] animal with long funny [C] ears.
[G] He kicks [C] up at anything [G] he hears.
[A] His back is brawny, [D] his brain is weak.
[A] He's just plain [C] stupid [D] with a stubborn [G] streak.
And by the way, [C] if you hate [G] to go to school, [E]
[C#] you [D] may grow up [G] to be a mule.
Or [E] would you like to swing [A] on a star?
[D] Carry moonbeams home [G] in a jar?
[E] And be better off [C#] than you are?
[D] Or would you rather [G] be a pig?
A [C] pig is an [G] animal with dirt [C] on his face.
[G] His [C] shoes are a [G] terrible disgrace.
[A] He has no manners [D] and he eats his food.
[A] He's fat and lazy [D] and extremely rude.
[G] But if you don't [C] care a feather [G] or a fig, [E]
[A] you [D] may grow up to be [G] a pig.
Or [E] would you like to swing on [C#] a star?
[D] Carry moonbeams home in [G] a jar?
[E] And be better off than [C#] you are?
[Bm] Or would you [F#] rather [G] be a fish?
A fish [C] don't do anything [G] but swim [C] in a brook.
[Gm] He can't [Am] write his name [G] or read a book.
[A] To fool the people [D] is his only thought.
[A] And though he's slippery, [D] he still gets caught.
But [G] then if that [C] sort of thing [G] is what you [E] wish,
[A] you [Bm] may grow up [G] to be a fish.
[E] And all the monkeys [A] aren't in the zoo.
[D] Every day you meet [G] quite a few.
[E] So you see, it's [A] all up to you.
[D] [E] You can be better than you are.
[C#] You [D] could be swinging [G] on a star.
Happy strumming!
