The biggest surprise is that Terry didn't make it as a big star.
[A]
[G] [A] [G]
[Am] [G] [Am]
[Am] Terry was probably the [G] best singer of that period.
He could sing jazz, he could sing folk, he could [A] sing, he could [Em] riff, rock, [A] he's hard as Rod Stewart.
He was the hottest thing in London.
[E] Everybody was talking about him.
This is the next big [Em] thing to come out of London.
[A] Terry's sound was [E] different.
He had that too, was pop, was rock, but was [E] country blues.
[A]
Being signed to Mickey Most at such a young age was stifling.
Terry gets [B] an average of [E] 3% for [F#] record, which goes up.
[C] [F#] I find that fair because it cost him nothing.
[Am]
[F#] [Am]
You thought I was this way.
It was always very obvious to me [G] that Terry was a phenomenal singer [E] and had great talent, even at a young age.
[A] [Am] Terry associated more with kind of black music at [G] that time.
He's got that kind of sound.
[E] Very different.
There was nobody like him.
[Am] You'd know him when [E] it [F#] was him.
He was one of the best [C#] white people we've seen.
[F#]
[F#] It's his voice.
[D#m] I think there are very [F#] few people that can sing the way that he does and make you believe every single word.
He's a very soulful voice.
You get [C#] people like Aretha just loving [F#m] his voice.
Mick Jagger, all those guys, [F#] they just [D#] get on.
[Fm] Some people remember Terry Reid because there was always [F] the rumor that he was supposed to be the original singer of Led Zeppelin back in the day, but he had his own solo career, so he did that.
[E]
When Led Zeppelin first arrived in the United States, the music was altogether new.
[F#]
Looking through [F] how this [D#] band came [Fm] together finally.
Jimmy Page [D#] famously asked you to join Led Zeppelin and [F] you suggested, I believe, Robert [C] Plant.
What happened there?
[C#] I didn't know [F] how it was going to be.
Nobody knew.
Terry wouldn't have known how it was going to be for him had he taken the [C] option.
[C#] He can't [C] see himself as the guy who
[F] missed out on being [C] there.
I just can't [C#] see him in Led Zeppelin.
[D#] Come on.
[A#] Did he audition for Led Zeppelin [F] or was that an urban [C#] myth?
What would [A#] have happened had Terry and [D#] Jimmy Page started making music [C] together?
I don't know.
It was a [C#] gesture made [D#] in time and the only reason it's worth talking [F] about now is because of what happened [D] afterwards.
I
[C] think I've got [G] red skin, blue
[D] skin.
What about sort of dream people to work with?
Terry Reid, Terry Reid, he made some great albums in the 70s.
He's definitely someone we look up to and you kind of say when you grow up you want to be like Terry Reid, you know, playing music like that.
I mean, Terry's one of the guys that's trying to move music forward.
He's never had an identity crisis.
He's never changed.
This is one of the magic things about Terry.
He's always been [F#] Terry Reid.
You get what you see and that's it.
And that's magic.
If he hasn't become a big star, it was not because of him.
We're okay, mate.
Good.
As long as you got what you need.
That's the main thing.
[A] Okay.
[D#] [F]
[Cm]
To [Fm] this day, he still sounds [A#] great.
[G] I've [D] always been a big fan [A#] of his.
[C] [D#]
[Em] It may be that [G#] the right [G] opportunity [C] hasn't presented itself.
[Fm] He's an incredible [A#] singer.
He has a great sense of music.
He has a great [D#] sense of rhythm, a great sense of chord [Fm] structure.
Terry was, I [A#] think, is the best [D#] rock vocalist that the world has ever seen.
[G] He's the most amazing rock [C#] vocalist [D] that you've never heard of.
[D] [G]
[A]
Maybe Terry Reid's time is about to come.
Who knows?
[G] [Am]
[D]
[G]
[A] [N] I never liked doing anything I didn't want to do.
