Know I think it's better like [Bm] lower
[F#] [D#m] and [G#] also because like every song
[E]
Seems [G#] [Em] a little like seems repetitive for the base
[Bm] [F#] [G#] Trying [E] [B]
[F#] [G#] to [E] [F#] switch up
[G#] [Gm]
[B]
[F#] The problem [G#] is you're the [E] base
[F#] [G#] [E] It's like it's not like it's not the foundation of the song like this
No, it's no it in the low.
He is like [B] the bigness of the of the song
[F#] [G#] [E]
[G#m] Some movement and some like attitude and stuff
But this like be low B and like f-sharp and g-sharp and low e is the song, you know
I didn't like [B]
write it go
[F#] [G#] That's [E] not the song
[B] [F#] But [G#] [B]
[N] I mean you wrote it like that doesn't mean the base can't do something different I don't know
I don't know if I agree with that though
Everyone's gonna voice their opinion, especially on their own parts and their own instruments
If if you don't have arguments, it's not like a really healthy relationship
I mean we just both wanted the best for the song
I had parts that I had made up on bass that Derek didn't necessarily like and then he would say why don't you play this?
And I didn't necessarily like what he wanted me to play.
And so we had to kind of meet in [Bm] the middle
[F#] [E]
[B] [N] When you hide there I don't
Don't hate the high oh, I like it
But it doesn't matter to me I could take that one I could I could take that one early though
Yeah, I'll care about that.
No, so if you really don't like it
[B]
[F#]
[E] [B]
[F#] [B] [E] [B]
[F#] [E] [N] I
Something came up Derek would come over and we practice it right away and that was fun
You know because it was like we're coming up with stuff off the cuff and everything
But I mean that's not to say the bite see 90% of the album was developed
You know in his little cave that he's [G#] got he's holed up in
[G#m] [C#m]
[F#] [B] [D#m] [G#m]
Every
Time [C#m] I'm writing an album [F#] I get really paranoid and I'm thinking I don't know how to [B] write songs anymore
I don't [F#] know what's going on.
[G#m] I've got writers block [C#m] and then all of a sudden [F#] it's just done
I'm like, how did that happen?
[B] it felt like I was struggling [G#m] this whole time and all of a sudden I had this [C#m] album that I really like and
[F#] That happened with this time and it was you know, it was [D#m] taking a really long time
[G#m] I spent [A#] probably ten [F#] months writing [E] songs
[Am] lyrically, I think Derek just had more time to sit and actually [E] think about what he wanted to write about and
[N] Take his time and not feel any pressure.
Just that there was no deadlines, you know
I started writing I had to decide in the beginning of what?
Kind of album I wanted to make and what kind of songs I wanted to write
And so I started to ask myself all these questions and then writing these songs within
in trying to answer these questions and
You know, I knew I wanted to make an album that felt important to me and had significance
So I thought the only way to be a hundred percent original is to write completely about myself
So I started going into areas and parts of myself that I've never even thought about and just brought up all these different topics
That are buried deep inside of me even I'm me who's known him forever.
I mean, I know he's
Doesn't open up
Like I guess he does with us but I mean, you know, I mean it's he's with other people especially an audience
I mean, it's you know, it's been a big big move for him
So I think it's good.
But I mean that's gonna make people like it more because it's more honest.
I
Think it's gotta be hard for anyone to you know, put that you know
Let everyone in the world hear I give out his problems or what he's thinking and you know
especially the songs about like, you know not meeting his father and
Stuff like that.
So that seems like a really hard thing to like just
tell everyone about and like let everyone in on his his life and like
So, I mean, I'm kind of glad that he did it.
I think it was time.
I think he felt it was time
We had so much confidence going into this album more than we've ever had because we were so rehearsed
We knew we liked every song on it and we knew it was, you know by far better than anything
We've ever done.
Oh, it was just a matter of executing in the studio and that was you know
Performances is where [B] we shine basically.
That's what we do and that's what we've always done.
I
[F#] [G#m]
[E] [B] [F#] [G#m] [E] [B]
[G]
[Em] Mean to be honest, I didn't really [C] want to produce this album at all the [D] beginning
I really wanted someone to do it.
We [Em] all wanted someone to do it, but
[N] It just wasn't working out with any of them [D] for whatever reason
[N]
I mean I had a demo form of the entire album that I had done
with all the songs leading into the next songs the exact sequence and everything and that was how
You know, I showed that to everyone to say hey look I can do this album.
It's already done
I just have to go in and record it like years ago.
I knew that Derek was [C] really
thinking about being a producer just the way [F#] he was kind [N] of
Always he's always watching over people in the studio.
He's always asking about mics and amps and he just started gaining all this knowledge about
Like studios and stuff that I just knew one day this was gonna come
I was actually skeptical if we got somebody then we'd have to then you you know
You end up arguing this with his ego, you know, and it becomes difficult and you know, so on the next one
I'm gonna have to be arguing with his ego, but this time it was fine
Hey Steve
Can you play a little bit again?
I wanted to sort of stay clear from Pro Tools
I mean I play with the click live we all do so I'm pretty good with timing
But I mean that you can't be
We're not robots, right?
So the human element of being a little bit off a little bit actually makes the song sound good rather than having it
Just be this good good good good good [Am] and then it sort of takes the life out [B] of it
[D#]
[N] we always start with the drums and
Before we used to do like a scratch guitar and then record it and play to that
But those guys, you know, we're always sort of do
