Hi everyone, Michael here and now we're going to take a look at one of those songs, one of those songs that just never
will ever go away.
Classic song, Stuck in the Middle With You by Steelers Will.
The guy behind Steelers Will is a guy called Jerry Rafferty who wrote Baker Street.
So it's one of his early incarnations, early projects.
Great song, just a great pop song, still sounds great today.
There's three guitars in this track.
There's a nice kind of ringing acoustic all the way through.
There's a little chop rhythm guitar and there's a slide guitar.
So I know you probably want to get to grips probably first of all with just the acoustic, but we're going to take a look at the other guitars as well.
But there's a secret to this song and when you actually listen to it, it's not just straightforward chords, there's a sound to it.
And I've actually established what that sound is and what it is, is your top E string.
Your top E string, which is this string, has got to be tuned down to a D string, to a D note.
So if you match your top E to your D, there's your D string.
In fact, all the guitars are tuned with the top E tuned down, so the electric guitars are tuned down as well.
But just for the acoustic, [G] take your top E string down to a D.
So here's the rhythm.
It's a D chord.
We're only holding the second fret of the G and the third fret of the B.
And really only playing the top four strings.
But here's the vibe and the rhythm.
It goes like [D] this.
[Gm] [D]
[A]
[D]
So pretty straightforward, but that ringing D note gives it a real sound.
Your main concern really is the rhythm.
A lot of it is upstrokes to get those kind of offbeats, so you're doing a down-up.
And then it's kind of upchops, really, upstrokes.
