They are members of a group who are very hot even in mainstream rock and roll.
Please welcome from the band Striper, Michael and Robert Sweet.
[Dm] [C]
[G] [Dm] [D] Welcome.
I want people to be a little familiar with you.
You have a new record, you have a hot new single that is really doing well in the charts.
I'd like to show a portion of Striper in action just so we can get a little frame of reference for you guys.
Can we do that?
Sure.
Alright, [F] here's a clip.
[G#] Always stay [C#]
in [A#] the time [D#] [G#] for you.
In the [Fm] world [Em] so big [D#]
and [D]
[C#] we [D#] [G#] can't afford you.
[G#] [N]
You know, when you look at that, there is no indication, I mean I didn't understand all the words,
but when I look at that, it looks like Poison or Rat or any of the other hard heavy metal kinds of bands.
I mean it's very difficult for people to know that you're talking, that the lyrics have to do with God and Jesus Christ.
Or am I the only one who thinks that?
That's the whole point, that's what we're trying to do.
You know, we're trying to relate to the kids and the people, you know, the world,
in a way where they can open up and listen to lyrics about Christ.
You know, yet enjoy the music as well.
Well, who is your audience?
I mean, do you have a large Christian audience and then you have other
People like you.
We saw you at one of our shows.
[Em]
Come on now, we really don't look like punk rockers.
Well, you don't look like punk rockers, no you don't.
But, what is your audience mix?
It's [F#] everybody.
I mean, [B] anyone who goes to a [F#] rock and roll show or any [D] concert out there can come and see Striper.
We're just getting across to people the reality of Christ [E] and how you can have a great time.
Now, what about the people, what [E] about any [C] detractors from the churches who say,
well, wait a [E] minute, dressing up in tight leather, it's really not what we had in mind here.
Yeah, we get a lot of [C] people, mostly it's Christian people that come against us, you know, more so than non-Christian.
Churchgoers or ministers?
Yeah, [N] you know, on the average I'd say those are the people that come against Striper more.
And we get a lot of support from, you know, non-Christian people.
But we have nothing bad to say about anybody.
We're just here doing our own thing.
God's called us to do it and we better do what God wants us to do, you know, because he's a powerful God.
Yeah, what about, I'm going to ask you about being on the road.
I mean, this would seem a little different than Kiss or David Lee Roth and Van Halen, some of those kind of things.
Do you get groupies?
Do you
Are different kind of groupie?
We take wives, is what we take.
We're all married, except for Robert here.
He's the single guy.
But I'm married.
What about you?
Do women approach you?
Try to bang their way into your dressing room?
Sure.
That just seems to happen if you're in a rock and roll band.
But let's put it this way, we just, we really don't have to worry [Fm] about some of the stuff that's out there and we [F#] don't wake up with hangovers.
Oh, okay.
Now was it tough to sell this act in the beginning?
I mean, was a record label anxious to take this on?
Because I would think it would be a little bit tough.
You know, our record company, every record company out there, that's their main thing is to sell [D] their records.
But we never took [F#] the attitude, look, we got to sell, we got to sell, we got to sell.
We took the attitude we might not sell, but if we're serving God, that's all that matters.
And, you know, we know where we're going to go when we pass away.
So, you know, God's our savior and that's why we're doing it.
That's the only reason.
Plus our record company listened to the music and they said if the music's good, then that's what we like.
But you are making some pretty good money at this.
You know, I mean, if preaching is [D] the number one reason, then the money's not a bad sidebar.
We're not poor, but we're [B] not the millionaires people think we are.
People think we're [C] millionaires, you know.
It takes a lot of money to be in [D] this business.
I mean, [F] of course, we're making money.
We need to survive as well as anyone else.
Well, you've done well in the mainstream.
Are you being acknowledged by other metal bands?
Do other people consider you a part of that community?
Yeah, we're friends with [Cm] a lot of the guys and, you know, whenever we hang out with them, we have a [F#] chance to tell them about what we believe in.
They usually ask [G] us.
Yeah.
People usually walk up and say, hey, tell us a little bit about this.
Okay.
Why do you think, [E] then, some of the other satanic stuff might sell so well?
[Em] Probably because the music's good and a lot of kids out there think it's cool.
Do you think the kids don't even hear the lyrics?
They just love the beat [E] and they
No, they [F#] hear the lyrics.
They [F#] catch on to it, but they think it's a cool attitude.
You know, it's a [Bm] rebellious type of attitude and we're actually rebelling against that type of attitude.
All right.
Well, I wish you continued success.
Well, thank you.
This is going pretty big for you guys.
It's [E] doing really good.
It's doing really well.
We're [D#] surprised, you know.
Yeah.
All right.
[F#] Well, good luck.
Well, thank you.
This is Mike [Dm] and Robert's feet.
