[B] Right, you're watching The Beat and there's still more music [C] to come,
but we've [Db] been joined now, I'm very pleased to say,
by [N] the Stone Temple Pilots who are in town at the moment.
Wyland and Dean, welcome to the programme.
[Dbm] Thanks.
[Fm] Now, you're a relatively new name to British [N] audiences here,
so give us an outline of where the band came from.
I mean, how did you characters first meet up in the first place?
Characters?
Well, Robert, Dean and I met at this
[Eb] I knew we'd met before.
[Db] I knew you.
You were trying to sort of change [N] your hair colour, but I remember you.
We're in the experimental phase.
Actually, I met Robert about five and a half years ago,
and shortly after that met Eric, and we started writing some songs
and recording some things together,
and then started playing out with a different guitar player,
and [Db] for about a year [C] and a half,
we were kind of not happy [Ab] with the overall gist of things,
so [N] we then kind of coerced Dean into coming up and jamming with us.
It was just a good vibe, and he's a better kisser than LAUGHTER
Well, I'm not sure if I'm going to find out this afternoon.
I mean, what was the idea with the band?
Was it something quite loose, quite laid back,
or was there a definite plan of action when you formed?
No, we just figured, you know, we'd write as many songs as possible
and play to jam together as much as possible
and play as many shows as we could cram into a month or a week
and just, you know, see what happened, really.
Everyone's got a very diverse sort of musical background,
so we're not all from the same kind of upbringing in music,
so there's probably a lot of things we [C] felt we could influence each other with
and kind of throw into a big old pot, you know,
like a big old steaming gumbo or something.
[G] [N] And just continued playing,
not really focusing on any kind of overall goal
like getting a major record deal or anything,
just actually trying to avoid that kind of thing, the Hollywood thing,
really focusing more on where Dean was from in San Diego
because it was more of a less homogenized,
anal-retentive sort of thing.
So we just started playing, and once we were to the point
where we wanted to start putting out records on whatever kind of way,
looking at a few local San Diego indie labels,
we were approached by Atlantic and the situation turned out to be a good one.
We were guaranteed full, complete control
of whatever we wanted to do artistically and haven't been hampered,
so we really don't have any complaints so far.
Has British music been an influence?
Oh, man, terribly so, terribly so.
I mean, grew up, I mean, as we speak,
I think one of the best bands ever, you know, Zeppelin.
And I was very influenced growing up by Bowie and Queen
and tremendous effect on my

Yeah, I mean, as far as all kinds of things,
I mean, see, that was one side of things,
and there's [Am] also all kinds of other bands from everything
[N] from, you know, Clash to Bauhaus to Elvis Costello
that are things that really inspired me.
You go on and on.
[Em] I'm [F] very pleased to say you've got your guitar [Ab] on you
and you're going to perform [E] a song for us.
Yeah, what song are you going to do?
Oh, this is a song [N] called Plush.
It's our new single in the United States of America.
So this is a bit of an exclusive for [Gbm] the beat.
