This song is based on a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson.
It was one of my favorite poems as a child at school,
and I remembered it very well.
This is called Christmas at Sea.
[C]
[Gm] [D] How dear we fought the tides between the North
and the South.
How [C] dear we hauled the frozen sheets
to escape the storm's wet [D] mouth.
Aren't we as cold as charity, [C] in bitter [Gm] pain and dread,
[D] For very life and nature [C] we [Gm] tack from [D] head to [Cm] head.
[Fm]
[Cm] [F]
[Bb] [F] [Bb]
[Cm] [D] [Bb]
[Cm] [Bb] [Eb] We gave the South a wet [Bb] berth, for there the tigress roared.
[F] But every tack we made we brought, the North head close aboard.
[Eb] We saw the cliffs and houses [Bb] and the breakers running high,
[F] And the coast guard in his garden, his [Bb] glass [Fm] against his [Cm] eye.
[Bb] [F] [Bb] [Fm]
[Cm] The [F] frost was [Bb] on the village roofs, [F] as white as ocean [Bb] foam.
[C] The good red fires were burning bright in every [Bb] longshaw home.
[C] The windows sparkled clear, and the chimneys volleyed out.
And above we sniffed the virtuals as the vessel went about.
[Bb] [Cm]
[D]
[C] [F] [Eb] The bells upon the church were rung, [Bb] with a mighty jovial cheer.
[F] For it's just that I should tell you how, of our days in the [Bb] year.
[Eb] This day of our adversity, [Bb] was a blessed Christmas morn.
[F] And the house above the coast guards, was the house where I was born.
